Just wait a few years, it'll be worth picking up in a GOTY edition, patched and with all the DLC in all likelihood. Even if the AI isn't better by then, mods will have fixed the problem.

It's a sleeper.

Some things are better, some much worse. I imagine next year it'll be worth it when it's patched, the DLC is all out, and mods fix the AI.

Yes.

Mechanically I like it better than V but without any expansions yet it is seriously lacking in content. It'll be damn near perfect in a few years if they manage to not fuck up making fun expansions.

Better than worth the expansion packs? Probably not, but I do like it better than V on release by a lot

Opinions are pretty divided on it, as per the norm for most Civ games.
I liked it, but it doesn't feel as refined as V got over the years due to fantastic patching as >>380775732 says
If you liked V however, you'll like it. Pick it up this summer sale if it dips to 50% off or higher
