My policy when working: Do not talk about or reveal political stances/religion/controversial issues unless you really, REALLY trust the person, and even then don't do it because you don't know if they will try to pull shit with HR or your boss.

To be fair, I do a lot more independent contract work in the IT field so topics generally stick to the business at hand then anything else. Sadly that also means that most of the people I work with have 0 interest in games or hide it so deep you would never know.

It's getting shitty out there in higher ed though. In the natural sciences you can still find non-adjunct positions or research scientist posts, but even those are getting harder and harder to come by. With what will likely be a collapse of many larger institutions in the coming decade or two, things are only going to get worse.

If you are sure you can handle dumping years of your life into a PhD and you're prepared to do something else completely different than being an academic after the fact, then you may consider giving it a shot. Anything short of that and I'd say you're making a bad move. If you're doing it because you think being a professor 'might be cool,' you should really reconsider.
