Also Cave Story is an overrated game. I'm all about replay-ability, but when the game kills off characters because you do what seems to be the logical choice it's really stupid.

Curly in that regard is not an important character to the story.

Yes, absolutely.

It's not hugely known outside of people who are fairly deep into the hobby, so I wouldn't say it's especially popular, even when compared with other indie games. You could maybe try to argue that it's overrated, but that wouldn't hold up well considering that it's a well made and damn fun game.
