Not the critic ones silly.

The user scores are the ones that really show what us gamers think right :^)

77 is a good score a for a fighting game with sparce content but good multiplayer options

I would argue better than Splatoon since that games multiplayer options at launch was Fucking horrendous
>>
>>380760012
User scores can also be bombed by other fanboys.

Just try to find reviewers who aren't corporate sellouts

We live in a world where 77 is considered 'bad.' I'm so tired of critics handing out 80's and 90's like candy. A score of 70 isn't bad, in fact it's pretty damn good.
>>
i'm a nintentoddler and even i didn't expect arms to pass 80. There's just not enough game there. It's a "fighting game" with like 4 moves.
>>
>>380760367
78 is good compared to the other fighting game scores, and 97 is good compared to other comparable scores, like the one listed.

User scores are fucking useless. People only ever give things 10, 8 or 0.

The only reliable things I've found from metacritic is below 6/10 means almost certainly crap, above 6/10 means may or may not be crap.

Yes.

They're not all that matters, but they do matter. You'd check Consumer Reports before buying a car, wouldn't you?

>>380760415
Critics are employed because there are games to play. Unlike movies, where the output is great enough to be more critical, the industry output of AAA games is still very limited and thus - even subconsciously - critics are partially salesmen, inflating scores to keep their jobs. That's unlikely to change any time in the near future, so the rule of thumb is that a 50% score for video games would be a 0% score for a movie.
>>
>>380759642
in the grand scheme of things, no.

individual opinion is still the most important thing.

that said, I can understand why Arms would get a 77, it's fresh, it takes a bit of getting used to, but at the same time, I get the feeling the Reviewers would get a sort of 'that's it?' feeling from it, fighting games just don't last as long in single player, which is what they would have solely had access to, essentially.

I feel like most 'critics' will still treat a 7 like a game that's good, not great, but still perfectly fine. It's mostly console warriors and /v/ that treat a 9 as the minimum acceptable score. I do wish more critics adopted the "5 is the default" method of scoring, however. Or hell, just abandon the scoring system altogether.

>>
>>380762183
They do, just like every other big company. They just don't bother with the shovelware.
>>
>>380759642
Sorta? It's a confirmation bias sort of thing. Say you really hate those SJWs. If you are on the fence about a game and you see some reviews either praising it for its diversity or hating on it for pandering it'll allow you to hate the game. Console warriors stir all sorts of shit because of them, but if you are actually interested in the game and it has good reviews you'll probably end up checking it out.
>>
>>380759642
not when nitendo does it

I remember watching the IGN Zelda review from Jose Otero and having Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us flash backs again. /v/ hated Greg Miller and Colin Moriarty from being Sony fan boys giving both those games perfect 10/10 reviews. I don't like the idea of fan boys reviewing games from their favorite series or companies because they're biased. Nobody blinks an eye when Jose Otero did it though.

its average so it matters when its in 80+ ball park. anything out of that is just mediocre and not worth spending time or money on.

As much shit as Horizon got for being generic, open world Ubisoft trash, it reviewed and sold pretty damn well for a brand new IP. There was no doubt that Zelda wouldn't sale like crazy, but you have to give it to Guerrilla for standing up to the champ.
>>
I think people should just abandon numerical values in reviews all together. If a review is solid it shouldn't need a number to back it up.

>>380766356
Honestly, it's good but not fantastic. Combat is weird. Right analogue stick causes you to attack in whatever dorection you tilt it in. This actually gives you quit a bit of freedom for attacking, but means it's sometimes hard to hit little enemies. You attack pretty slowly, so small fast enemies or large crowds of big enemies are basically guarenteed to hit you once unless you get lucky. Basically, if you're not retarded, you should get used to attacking with the analogue stick in like 20 minutes, but unarmed combat can still be frustrating at times. There are a lot of weopons in the game, though, and they're fine.
The main problem is just that the first fourth of the game or so (~45 minutes) is too easy and the beginning has way too many unskippable cutscenes and tutorial bits. Past that, the game really is fun and eventually pretty challenging.
>>
>>380760012
Please don't tell me that you're saying other people bombed the score because it got 4 fucking points lower.
>>
>>380760367
Did you expect Arms to get nearly 80? I didn't. Seems more successful than expected to me.
>>
>>380763570
Absolutely delusional.
>>
No. If you want to use reviews, it's best to find a reviewer that matches your taste. Find one that has done a couple of games you liked and disliked and see if they did the same for similar reasons.

Reviewers all have different tastes, so metacritic just jumbles everything up into a number that will be inaccurate for most people.
>>
>>380760367
>>380767063
>>380763570
So let me get this straight if the score is too high it's paid reviews and if its in the middle ground it's shit, and if it's too low the reviewer is just a salty shit?
>>
>>380767978

Honestly, I tend towards strategy games, so I just watch a few minutes of a Let's Play. With those games, what you see is basiclaly what you get, so regardless of the players opinion, I just buy it if it looks fun.
>>
>>380759642
Eh. They're generally in the ballpark, but a lot of critics just don't "get" certain games. So y'know, grain of salt and all that.

Personally, I always look on /v/, and see if I can find positive discussion about the game. If this cesspool of hate can muster up a decent defense for a game, then it probably has merit.

If you think arbitrary number scores matter, then yes, why wouldn't an aggregate of them matter?

It's weird to think that I actually liked the old Kotaku review format the best. What the reviewer liked in blue, what they didn't like in red, how much they played, and how it relates to other games. No score.
>>
>>380768967
A score is a fast and dirty easy to digest rating, the general populace love them, so they aren't going away.

They don't. It's something to consider, but it's just a collective opinion by some fags. They over rate and under rate all the time. See: Pokemon XY and the pokemon mystery dungeon series respectively.
>>
>>380759642
>>380760367
The thing with ARMS is that it's more or less the same thing Bomberman, Wave Race, Blast Corps or Pilotwings were for the N64.
Good filler games. Nothing you'd buy a console for, but something that keeps you entertained.
Whyever the fuck Nintendo is pushing it THAT hard is something I don't understand.
They should rather put that effort behind Splatoon 2 and SMO.

I'm a Switch and Nintendo fan and in this case the score is justified.
It's not a terrible game, but it's not exactly a great game either with rather little content atm. 7.5/10 or so right now is totally ok.

It's a good idea though so that you don't just burn pout people on the game and keep them coming back for the updates. It also makes things more accessible for new players because when a new update comes out it's a new experience for everyone.

If like Splatoon, Arms feels like it's lacking content at release, then just wait until more of it comes out.
