When I was 6, I got Castlevania 3 for the NES. I played that allt he time. Then I got Super Castlevania 4, and I was blown away. These games were my childhood. Simon, Trevor, Sypha and Alucard were my friends that I didn't make at school. Castlevania was my secret little world, where I could escape the problems around me. Then I got Symphony of the Night, and I was blown away. My teenage years were defined by playing that game over and over again.

It's by Michiru Yamane. Thing is though, how many times can you make 10/10 scores? She did that for Symphony, and really, it's not like she can do that again. From Rondo, and Symphony, and Super Castlevania. They likely justified spending a bit more on rondo to create assets to be used later in other games intentionally. That's why you get well animated enemies in Rondo that show up just once for no reason.

But really, even those games weren't that expensive either. All of these old classic games on the nes, snes, etc were little affairs that cost a few hundred thousand, or a few million tops. The era of big budgets didn't show up until the 32 bit consoles and cds.

I'm pretty happy with what they've showed so far. The demo last year played just like SOTN and this new demo shows a lot more content in terms of weapons.
I like that they're making some of the enemies a bit more aggressive too, like those spear enemies.

Not being bound to the CV IP will hopefully give them a bit more freedom in what kind of enemies/mythologies/environments they show in the game. I can forgive some roughness in the graphics if the map is huge and its decently challenging.

It doesn't look that great but it gets the job done. But the big difference is how it it plays. When I played the demo for it handles just like most of the Metroidvanias. Time it takes to move across the screen, air control, jump canceling, backdash canceling and so on. Also the area you explored and the enemies you fought fit in just fine. Everything was meshing together.

Compare that to when I tried the demo of Might Number 9 which left me depressed and completely disinterested in playing the final game. It controlled like a very sluggish MegaMan clone with an awkward dashing mechanic that sometimes felt like it was an untested mechanic in both how you used it and how it interacted with the level design ("They want me to just spam air dash... again?") . The very cheap appearance was just icing on the cake there.

MN9 and Bloodstained looked good on paper, but had poor plans. They weren't trying to scam anything, it's just that they hadn't tested their plan first before making the crowd sourcing campaign. If they had made a demo first, they likely would have made alterations to their plan. A different engine, a different graphic style, a different dev studio, something. Then the actual games would have turned out better.

Iga is trying to fix the situation by hiring extra teams, but you can tell that the development has been a bit of a mess. It doesn't mean the game is doomed, just that they were pretty inefficient with the budget.

Iga was moved to the "Social games" division in 2011, and Lord of Shadow was made with different people. He did act as producer for a few minor titles at the time for console games (moe gradius), but at his day job he was a failure. He tried to make "real" games, and it didn't work at all. The animations have changed several times since the game was first showcased. The game is still early in development and assets are nearly always placeholder while a game is being developed. In all likelihood, it'll continue to go through more iterations just like basically everything about the game's visuals have with each gameplay showcase.

They absolutely scrambled to get that Demo out on time. After 2 years they're only at the 20% done mark. And they had to hire two additional teams, that were not planned initially. Teams that could work with Unreal since Inti had no idea what they were doing. They had falsely assumed that Inti had gotten Unreal experience with MN9, but nope. They just used some drag/drop level Unreal builder.

There's behind the scenes issues. It's not going to doom the project, but development has not been perfectly smooth.

There's a bunch of stuff we haven't seen yet like forged weapons and things like that. They'll probably show up once IGA shows off the weapon forging system instead of "basic" whips, etc., I'd wait a little longer before saying it's a bait and switch.

I honestly don't think they've finished touching up the level they showed off for the demo. For the first demo on the ship, it looked kind of mediocre, but in the latest screens from that same ship they've improved the lighting and added rain so it looks a lot better. I bet that's what they're doing with this demo: Just providing a basic stage to show off the gameplay and weapons, and the actual level will have proper lighting, shadows, etc. in a little while.
