Were they TV screens or computer monitors?
monitors.
TVs dont have those kinds of stands
3+K > 2 > CD > 1The first Sonic had only three good zones.
They get this interference sometimes. Sounds more like a TV
They were containers with a visual display. Robotnik tech is pretty good
Containers with an electronic display to display their contents, more like computer monitors

The interference is due to the boxes being configured via satellite. That many containers can't all be set manually, not reasonably at least.
They'reMETAL BAWXES

I'd actually go 3&K > 2 = CD > 1 myself, just for the fact that 2 has shit like getting stuck in the wall of a loop if you go too fast and that spike pit in Mystic Cave, plus some of the zones sucked (Hilltop in specific).
CD has cool mechanics but feels like a Sonic 1 remake (Palmtree Panic = Green Hill, Collision Chaos = Spring Yard, Tidal Tempest = Labyrinth, Quartz Quadrant = underground sections of Marble, Stardust Speedway = Star Light, Metallic Madness = Scrap Brain, with Wacky Workbench being the most original zone). Plus the bosses were absolute shit with most bosses dying in 3 hits with no invulnerability and the final boss needing 4 hits.

So these ones have tiny Robotniks inside them?

They're monitors. That's why the containers in Sonic 3&K resemble Apple monitors of the time. This was later carried into Sonic 4 with its containers being widescreen monitors.
I wish the series didn't drop monitors for the bubble-container look.

do sonic games in 2017 have LCD monitors?

No it's those stupid bubble capsules or balloons. Not sure about Mania, though.
