this. not only is the other broken tube a huge clue, but you normally get the power bombs just prior to this section.

Kid you have no idea what actual undiscoverable stuff looks like. Go play something like Grim Fandango and come back to us.

It's also just plain a totally different vidya world and culture these days. Back then when we were living that era we were all just more sensitive to secret stuff and trying to shoot everything and explore everywhere and look for subtle hints and clues. Players got into the zone of expecting to have to find stuff themselves. Modern kids who who expect on-rails lighted sign QTEs for everything just aren't in the habit of that at all and get all mad about it. In fact even expecting them to go find a FAQ is too much nowadays, they'll just give up rather then try to read anything.

Still to this day I've got no clue how you solve the wheelbarrow on the vires stuff in the forest.

I was 10 years old and I figured it out:

Literally spamming everything I had out of frustration.
>>
>>380743679
you get a map station that reveals there's more to that room than just that one square

right after you hit the map station you enter a one way room that takes you here

according to your new map there's a save point below and a door to the rest of the meridia up top

i was only 9 years old when this game came out and i figured out without a guide because the map makes it clear it's the only direction you can go
>>
>>380744113
Bombs do nothing. Shooting does nothing. X-ray definitely doesn't show it's breakable. How the fuck are you supposed to know it's breakable? Other than wasting power bombs?

You waste a power bomb, which also happens to be the most efficient way to tell if there's something to break in a room.

I have no idea how to actually solve pic related. I just hit switches until shit started to work.

Grim Fandango was a fucking trip without a guide. Tough as fuck, but thinking outside the box for some of the more obtuse puzzles made me feel like a genius when it worked out.

>>380744930
You push the wheelbarrow over the wires to temporarily stop the little antennae on the tower. Your goal was to get the left side and right side out of sync so that it would start to wobble and fall over.

You don't know if it's going to be breakable or not, but you try what you have. You also find a loop around to this area just after getting Power Bombs, if you are paying attention, the game does this a lot, it directs you in subtle ways towards areas where your new power up can be used. Why wouldn't you try power bombs on everything just after getting them?

2 things
Map station
Enemy

Theres a map that shows you need to keep exploring around there somehow. You would think that you would simply go behind the tube though once you find a way in.

Until you see an enemy that pisses you off so damn much you finally power bomb the fucker for staring you down every fucking time you come back to this god damn room.

So basically an in game clue that it is possible to get there and also motivation to use the move eventually, for me it was emotion based because I got so angry as a kid since other games didnt stump me.

>>
>>380743679
You literally never have to figure this out. You can access above the tube by going through the Wrecked Ship and the only thing below the tube is a Save Station.
>>
>>380745751
Yeah, but the thing is none of the other colour gems are acquired like it, being found through hidden paths and in one case just by beating a river level before the timer runs out. Nobody would think to not smash the boxes so the box counter at the end saying "[number]/0" isn't really gonna be noticed.
>>
>>380746062
>That's not a connection anybody would logically make, don't kid yourself.

None mentally challenged people did.
This meme underwater tube was never an issue. No one ever complained about this until recent years when younger kids started going back to older games and being stomped by retarded shit like this because no ingame protip popped up telling them what to do.
>>

The game came with an official strategy guide. At least in the European release.

Also, in older games (old RPGs in particular) it was fairly common to include puzzles that you'd have a hard time solving on your own because developers made money by selling strategy guides.

It's a fucking glass tube, and you have a full-screen bomb.
The only other tube in the game is already broken.
Did you never just try it to see what would happen?

I clearly remember when I was 11 and playing this game at a comic store ($3 for 1 hour of playtime!) and I was giddy when it worked.

Nah. That's a random guess which you have no real reason to assume from a logical standpoint. Every fucking game released back in those days would reuse assets with slight changes like that. Even the idea that it was near where you got the power bombs is a far more reasonable one than that. You weren't smart for figuring out, you were a dipshit who put things into random holes and happened to get it right. Assuming you actually did figure it out back in the day, which you probably didn't, because otherwise you'd be fully aware that games pulled stupid shit like that with the specific intention to stonewall players on a regular basis.

You literally were not meant to figure it out without random guesswork or paying up.

>>380745365
Simple trial and error?
I giggled a bit when I made the two statues jump into each other
>>
>>380745365
Ok. In all sincerity, I absolutely fucking hated that puzzle. The reason being, is because it was just a random puzzle. It didn't tie into the Zelda lore at all. You didn't use any of Links weapons or abilities to solve it. There were no hints in-game as to how to solve it. It could have literally just been a Sudoku puzzle, or a game of tic-tack-toe, or a slide-the-blocks-and-solve-the-image puzzle. And I'm fine for those kinds of things as a mini-game, but to be part of a major "questline" was just absurd.
>>
How the FUCK were you supposed to figure this out?
>>
>>380747502
But even back then, if you were stuck but had a random path to which you could go on the map, it was usually the case that you best just tried out all skills and items in the places near that indicated path.
>>
>>380747640
That's not comparable at all.
>>
>>380747759

>>380746452

There was only 1 other tube in the whole game that looked like that as well. The thing is if you apply zelda logic to metroid you can succeed.

This is nothing compared to other retro games so you are either less inclined to abstract thinking than others OR somehow everyone else who ever disagrees is a big fat liar and your always right. Thats how you are coming off.
>>
>>380747592

>>380746706
You actually do need to figure it out,
By design anyway, as the only other way between the upper and lower sections of the zone involves opening a green shutter from the wrong side by glitching a super missile through it.
If you think I'm wrong go ahead and draw the route you think will get you there on this map. watch out for that silver one way

That said, the path you suggest does lead to a similar tube that's already broken as part of the environment and this is suppose to be your hint.
>>
How the FUCK were you supposed to figure this out?
>>
>>380747480
Look more like blown up doors
>>
>>380747592
Metroid back then had very good attention to detail. You're supposed to notice how the ends of the tube are blown out from an explosion of some kind.
>>
>>380747758
Sure, random guesswork could totally get you there. But pretending the broken tube was a clue and that you totally figured it all out and knew exactly what you were supposed to do before you randomly bombed it is just lying.
>>
>>380747927
>looks nothing like the door graphic and is easily 3 times the size
>looks like doors

Not even close man, what are you even doing.
>>
>>380747759
I hear you. It should have been simplified or at least some clues should have been provided beforehand, such as a bell-ringing mini game.
>>
>>380748002
There are plenty of places where stuff is broken from explosion or something and can't be broken by yourself at any point. What makes this special?

>>
>>380748009
Well, I can believe someone might have found this thing suspicious.

Maybe it was because I was a kid that I didn't get the hint initially.

But at least it wasn't too random in that the map and even screen graphics really gave you a very clear hint around where to start trying stuff.
>>
>>380746996
(You)
>>
>>380748150
I mean, you're right. It's not the best hint, but Japan had (and still somewhat has) a fetish for dick-move puzzles with absolutely zero clues, so this was still pretty generous for the time.
>>
>>380748354
The doors arent flanged exactly the same way as the only other tube in the game and doors are much thinner.

Seriously Super metroid used all of the snes power to show amazing attention to detail as far as showing where hidden paths and secrets are. Even more so guiding you along the main path. I never realized until replaying it as an adult but I can see why I loved it so much when I was young.

I think Cyan back then in particular also just had a pretty good sense of style and artistry, there is other pre-rendered stuff from that era that hasn't aged so well. They had Myst under their belts though and really had the tools down plus were willing to sink a lot into each frame, they made the place really organic. There was attention to fine detail we don't see so much anymore, I don't think a game like Myst or Riven could ever get greenlit with a big budget nowadays, or for that matter sell so well.

I didn't have a smartphone or even a featurephone at all back in 2006. I had a plain cellphone for work and emergency use and that was it, I didn't get on the digital train until later for better and for worse. I could have stuck some temporary marks on the TV though, glass CRT still at that point so would have easily come right off. Instead I suffered through it, getting the item though felt like a real achievement since I wasn't using a guide either. I should replay it, too bad Crapcom were such faggots to clover.

There is actually a clue.
At the end of each level the game tells you how many boxes you have broken, but once you have the gem, only in this level the number remains at the end of the level and it tells you how many boxes you have broken out of 0, implying that you need to break 0 boxes for another gem.
So it wasn't a complete mystery.

The entire level design of Super Metroid is that if you pay attention, it shows you what you must do to advance to another area without any text or spoken words. Be it with the wall jumping monkeys, the speed running dodo bird or in this case the broken glass tubes which have broken parts. Everything had a reason, they weren't just there for nothing.

To be fair old games hat are highly regarded used every inch of the screen to tell the player stuff especially in exploraiton games like metroid. Even some good n64 and ps1 games did this because every polygon mattered.

Compare that to modern games where you can never tell if anything is worth searching becasue devs just use speet tree and spam foilage everywhere for "muh realistic graffix"

I call it visual clarity, and its how the developers use the 3d space and art to lead the players to conclusions. Most modern games dont bother with anything like this at all leaving you t o wonder if entire chunks of gameplay are worth exploring or not.

If this were a 3D game it'd be a little jarring, but in 2d games its a little easier to expect someone to just shoot everything while running.
In a game Prime they'd get lost in the environment so theres a chance you'd never hit it even if you're firing at everything, but Super Metroid you don't have an excuse when you can just shoot as you're walking hitting literally all the walls and ceiling tiles, and often the manuals would just tell you where to shoot anyway (not to mention guides were a legit thing).

What am I wrong about? You're intended to go through the wrecked ship first to get the gravity suit and then you go through Maridia. You can get the powerbombs prior and blow up the tube from the inside but there's little point since you'll barely be able to move in the water. The only thing under the tube is a save point.

That's not the solution though. You can jump on it, but that only does so much. If you stand on it, pressing up and down actually will move it enough to be out of the way. >>
>>380766069
Sorry ignore my terrible reading comprehension. I for some reason thought your up and down ment jumping.
>>
>>380743679

I figured this out because powerbombs were the best way of discovering destroyable blocks on the screen and I couldn't be bothered to bomb jump the top bit.

One thing I also discovered the first time was that it seemed to be possible to 'drown' before you got the gravity suit. I was jumping around for 10 minutes then suddenly I got stuck and my health drained away in about 20 seconds (comparable speed to the mother brain attack). I've been told drowning isn't a thing in this game but I definitely did die that way. Did I just clip through scenery or something and that triggered that sort of damage?

You can use the green gate glitch to skip the tube, but that's the only way.
This extraordinarily low quality map illustrates the areas you are able to reach from the wrecked ship without either glitching the green gate or blowing upp the tube.

You son of a bitch. I said and I quote
>I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure you need to break the tube to proceed without glitching
>without glitching

Jerk

I'm not the guy you were talking to, so I don't know the whole conversation.
>>
>>380768034
Oh well thats fine.

So I was right though, and thats a huge relief because if there was something I didnt know about this game I would be amazed to say the least.
>>
>>380743679
I spend hours there. I went so many times through other route. From how map looked, I was sure there was supposed to be something there.
The first time around I got there, I tried using everything I had to break glass, but I didn't have power bombs. I completely forgot about that so I didn't even try for long time.
It was only part, I didn't like. For everything else there were some hints, like animals using moves, that you could pull off as well.
>>
>>380768451
I was stuck here for like an hour as well but I think it has plenty of hints. They are just far more abstract than most others.

see
>>380746452
and
>>380748613

Its easily the most bullshit part of the game but hardly that bad compared to other games.
>>
>>380743782
That tube didn't give any clues as to how to break it, just that it was broken. It's not like people like wasting items on something with no evidence.

Which Tomb Raider had the stage where you start off underwater, with an air limit and sharks around you?

OK

1. The tube is what you pass through pretty early on but you can't do anything with it. From there you poke your nose into Norfair and explore to get the high jump boots and then fight Kraid. then you get the varia suit and are able to mostly explore the entirety of Norfair to get the grappling hook.

2. Eventually you'll make your way back here and get your first powerbombs. You could go back and bomb at this point but instead you go up the elevator that takes you near your ship

3. You bomb this door and make your way to the wrecked ship. Once you arrive you fight the boss there.

4. You make your way to get the gravity suit. Once you re-enter the ship you'll want to make your way to the right since now you can walk through water without difficulty

5. The entrance to Maridia. Once here you get the plasma beam and fight a boss to get the Space Jump then you'll proceed toward the fight with Ridley in lower norfair.

The tube blocks off a shortcut and a save room. But it's not necessary to break it unless you want to make space pirate cry.
>>
What was more bullshit, the breakable tube or the Barrel in Sonic 3?
>>
>>380769274

>5. The entrance to Maridia.
The parts of Maridia you are able to reach from that entrance are very limited. I have circled those areas here. The only way to escape the circled area and explore the rest of Maridia is by using the green gate glitch or bombing the tube.
>>380767721
You can't get the plasma beam until after you have beaten Draygon, by the way. There are a lot of grey doors up there until you kill him.
>>
>>380769343
Barrel.

The barrel is misleading, it makes you think your jumps have any effect when the solution is to hold up and down.

For the Super Metroid bomb tube to be as bullshit, it would have to have a picture of a missle on it.

I went through wrecked ship first, because I couldn't figure out tube thing. From what I remember, going from wrecked ship site, it was impossible to reach boss.
>>
>>380769274
Your step 5 is all wrong.

That entrance from crateria funnels you back to the same tube until you beat the boss. One way doors are a bitch man

Heres what you seemed to miss

The red line is the path you can take from the entrance, I attempted to highlight the parts you cant get through until you break the tube or glitch.

After you beat the boss all the locked doors open so that might be why you thought it was possible.
>>
>>380743679
First of all.
You use the super bombs everywhere in order to find secrets. Every screen. So you'd find it just like that anyway.
Also >>380743782.

Sounds to me like you're some kind of player who wouldn't have put a bomb on and set every square on fire in the original Zelda.

ah shit i forgot about that and the big room right above the tube being inaccessible due to the gate as well as needing to kill the boss for the area to really open up. My bad.

Thinking back on it the only thing that kinda screwed me over was in Tourian since you get locked out of going back in case you wanted to do some last minute item gathering.
>>
>>380743679
I played Zero Mission before Super and /v/ accidentally spoiled me on Power Bombs and intentionally spoiled me on Draygon.
This was years ago, mind you, and I doubt anons would be so kind nowadays.
>>
"Trying everything on every screen in frustration until it works" does NOT mean that you figured it out when you were a kid. This is one of those stupid retarded puzzles that relies on using real-world logic to solve the problem rather than using mechanics that the player has been introduced to, yknow like how VIDEO GAMES are supposed to.
If it's so obvious that you should be able to break the tube because "you can do it in real life", then how come I can't just shoot at a dirt wall for a few hours and tunnel through to the next zone? I could do that in real life if I had missiles so why not in the game?
Because games are not real life and they have their own rules which need to be taught to the person playing it in some way, instead of just forcing them to guess that they need to use a certain item in one specific room in the entire game to affect something that anyone would assume is just background decoration.

All coloured gems in at least Crash 2 are gotten through some kind of puzzle or alternative way of completion. Just because you're a muppet doesn't excuse you shit posting.
>>
>>380772702
>then how come I can't just shoot at a dirt wall for a few hours and tunnel through to the next zone?
shooting at the dirt wall is how you find most secret tunnels, and some of those are indeed shortcuts between zones

>>380772702
>i cant infer

see
>>380768918
There are plenty of clues
>>
>>380743679
once super bombs aren't so scarce you get in the habit of dropping one every time you have a hunch there's something to be revealed on the screen you're on. since super bombs nuke any destructible objects on-screen including the entrances to secret tunnels
