They tried going for a more raw and angry sound and it ended up sounding like shit due to the combination of trashcan drums and the voice of load/reload era James. Overall uninspired songs

It isn't a particularly strong album, in particular the production is pretty dire, and it was just a big departure from what you'd expect from a Metallica album at that time. It also coincided with the then-current bassist leaving the band and a documentary film about the recording, which spends quite a lot of time showing the band faffing about in their extremely expensive houses like it's a fucking episode of Cribs and even hiring some expert for group therapy sessions.

I think most of the songs would benefit from having like two thirds cut away. The single version of St Anger is much better than the full album version for the same reason

Here's another song that is also eight minutes, but there's more happening throughout. But it wasn't really even the same band at that point, they had been making that rock stuff for like fifteen years at that point

The game isn't actually that bad, Gameplay is amazing but the story isn't anywhere near on par with previous ones.

I liked it, and I think it would have been way better received if they hadn't released it under the name Metallica. It just doesn't fit them at all.
