Then move on to Super Mario 64(DS remake is fine, and has quite a few new things to make up for d-pad controls), and give Sunshine a try. Sunshine's my favorite in the series but I'm not sure what kind of first impression it would leave on an older person. New Super Mario Bros. DS is nice but the rest of the "New" installments spawned a bit of a dark age.

Galaxy 1 and 2 are must-plays. Mario is also host to some of the best spin-offs in gaming:

Shitposting aside, Mario Games tend to be excellent games all around.

The primary draw of each new Mario game is the level design. They seem to never run out of ideas for unique mechanics and hazards and just keep coming up with more and more cool shit to do in the games. It's an absolute joy to see what they've come up with from game to game.

The controls are always super tight and (although this varies) Mario's moveset provides you with a good range of tools but never too much to make the levels pointless.

The difficulty curve is always well done. First couple worlds are stupid easy as you get used to the controls, then things gradually escalate until the last few worlds are a genuine challenge. Not the hardest platformer you've played, but certainly a meaty challenge for most players.

Mario games, like all good Nintendo IPs, are 100% focused on the gameplay and really nice fun presentation.

So yeah, Mario is pretty great, just a fun ass video game for people who enjoy fun ass video games man.

Also I found Starship Mario more comfy than the observatory, now if only you had to explore to get from level to level. Mario Galaxy is a good entry point. Out of the main 3D Mario games, the only one I would avoid to start with is Sunshine.

I genuinely believe SM64 is one of maybe a dozen 10/10 games ever made, but that's giving it too much credit.

It was revolutionary, sure, but most games that were directly influenced by it were influenced by it's worst aspects. Very few games really take after SM64 in a meaningful way.

Quake came out slightly earlier and arguably did more to "define 3D games" and that's not even getting into games like Ultima Underworld and System Shock, who's influence is in pretty much every game today.

What I loved about SMG is the gravity mechanic. It was so much fun jumping from planet to planet, using your spin to jump even higher, standing upside down on a planet and jumping in any direction. Galaxy 2 has a lot more 2.5D stages, which is fine if you're into that sort of thing, but it lost a lot of what I loved about the original.

Plus, the original has such an amazing atmosphere. Just the backgrounds of each level made you feel like you were staring into the infinite cosmos. SMG2 has a very cheerful, happy-go-lucky feeling to it. The levels in SMG felt like they were built/inhabited by aliens, and it could be creepy, dark, and intense. The music also reflects the intense atmosphere, and I still have some of these tunes stuck in my head.

tl;dr I prefer SMG's level design, atmosphere, and jumping mechanics over SMG2's, though SMG2 is still really good. SMG is unironically my favorite Mario game, and I'll never get tired of replaying it.

Oh man, the Galaxy backgrounds are just beautiful. They do such a good job at portraying how massive everything is, but not in a way that makes you feel insignificant.

Speaking of SMG2, it had some backgrounds that were quite baffling. Like the desert world, that had those countless, massive towers jutting out from the sandstorm below and so far into the sky, it was a challenge to position the camera to give you a full view of them. And the final Bowser level, where the background was a universe-sized castle hallway, holy shit.

I agree that SMG does some things better than 2, but overall 2 feels more streamlined. The SMG hub system was a mess imo, and many worlds weren't that good in terms of actual level design (not taking into account atmosphere or backgrounds). The most crucial parts of a Mario game are the platforming parts, whether they're 3D, 2.5D, etc., and SMG2 focuses more in that aspect than the first one.

SMG feels more grandoise and adventure-ish while SMG2 is more like Super Mario Bros. 3 preserving and perfecting the actual gameplay mechanis from SMG1 that were worth preserving plus adding more stuff + Yoshi.

The soundtrack of SMG2 was actually great too, although SMG was better in that regard.

If you're going to play mainline Mario all the way through you should probably play them with other games alongside. Mario is great, but playing any series/genre of game exclusively to completion, with the amount of games Mario has you'd probably burn out.

Play SMB 1-3, World, 64, sunshine, galaxy 1-2, and 3D World if you can. I don't know if cemu plays 3D World or not, but those are the mainline Mario games.

Best thing you could do is Play Mario 64, Mario Sunshine and Galaxy in that order.
Maybe even Galaxy 2 but that is closer to 3D Land than the other 3D games.

It's very important you play not only all the games in chronological order
but also Galaxy at the very end just so you get a good perspective on how much focus
on speed and tight controls has been losing priority over time and is just now coming back with Odyssey.

It is true that people including myself are eagerly awaiting a proper graceful comeback of non-linear 3D platformers fuck Yooka-Laylee
But there is not a single game that comes even close to the way 64 handled its movement mechanics
and how they're tightly knit into both speed and the skill ceiling,

It looks like Mario Odyssey is trying to do what BotW did to open world/zelda style adventure games, introduce a bunch of genre changing revolutionary game concepts. The hat, hat possession, and the improved movement all look absolutely incredible if you're into 3D platforming.

SM64 for DS is kinda meh, the physics feel a bit off and the character switching is more annoying than useful. It's better to just play the original N64 release. Play the DS one afterwards for the extra levels/bosses.
