Basically, yes, "the zone" does exist and it's where you hit a weird state of mind where you're both 100% focused on what you're doing but relaxed at the same time. You can't force yourself to enter it but every so often you can slip into it without realising until afterwards where you think back and notice how much of a roll you were on.
