To be honest, GoW was never really that good, so at least changing up the formula could be an improvement.
My real complaint is that, of all the mythologues they could have chosen to have Kratos beat up they go with fucking Skyrim, because that's not overused at all.

Also, I personally absolutely fucking hate lengthy dialogues and endless blahblahblah in games. It's fine if I'm already into the game and enjoying it and actually wish to know more about the game world and the lore. That way I'm interested in it by default because I'm already invested in the game.

On the other hand, throw WORDSWORDSWORDSWORDSWORDS at me for hours following the intro without actually letting me play the fucking game and I'll be uninstalling (and refunding) it in a heartbeat. I don't give a fuck about the gameworld if I don't first get to play the game and actually start caring about it. I hate when devs expect me to actually care about Generic Fantasy Universe #2183 without giving me a good game first.

I played God of War and the setting is so ridiculously over the top I'd actually rather NOT have a story because it just doesn't fit it.

How is wanting more narrative ruining video games. This isn't exactly wrong either, but its just a difference in culture.
Americans want fast, overly exciting games, something Michael Bay would produce, like Hack and slash games, or games like the Call of duty franchise where there constantly needs to be a gigantic explosion or action, shooting and murdering, to mirror their fast lived culture solely forced on consumerism. No large story or any sort of intrigue, as the action would need to be paused in order to set up something complex and interesting.
Europe is much more reserved, preferring gripping stories, interesting characters, mysteries, or something that provokes thought, of course, separated by phases of action, but in the end, a more diverse experience with the narrative as its main focus. This mirrors a broader culture, that in history, has focussed much more on things like art and belief than america.
