Endlessly doing isDead checks and handling onDeath events is a fucking pain in the ass and an enormous amount of work just to handle the off chance the player is a sociopath. I just gave up and starting setting everyone as essential until the quest is complete too.

There's quite a bit in vanilla Skyim that prevents a child from being anything but a child, you can't just flip a switch or something. They don't get the follower dialogue because they don't have the right voice type. You have to change it to something that covers the follower dialogue in the CK and only adult voices do that.
