Games ARE better than they used to be. Objectively. Ask any developer and they will tell you much the same. People can still play good games that were released a while ago and draw on inspiration from several to make something great. Shovel Knight trounces everything it takes inspiration from because it took the good and left the bad in the past. Never. The industry found mainstream acceptance, there are way too many games coming out, and also today you can make a game with a team of 2 neckbeards in a garage and release it digitally for real cheap.

The north american crash of the Atari days happened because consumers couldn't tell the good games from the bad, there was no way to know what was going on so people stopped buying. Today you can watch footage of a game very easily and inform yourself on the product, also demos and whatnot. It's a different situation entirely, today info on a game is plentiful, and when publishers hold the info like early reviews people already may suspect the thing will suck dick.

Well Shovel Knight definitely hasn't been forgotten, but if it had it would be down to the classics having a wider audience. The NES and SNES had a smaller library and the classics as we know them were the AAA games of their time, meaning they reached a lot more people. Shovel Knight on the other hand was a modern day indie with so much more competition and a far smaller advertising budget, not to mention its potential audience isn't as concentrated as it was when there were only a handful of consoles kicking about. The classics are remembered for the same reason Assassin's Creed will be remembered; not based on quality, but on how many people played them.

Publishers are also not doing early reviews because the vidya press is increasingly becoming irrelevant to selling games. It isn't worth sending out review copies and opening up servers two weeks early when people are just going to streamers and youtubers who can just get a copy day one and instantly live stream your product to their audience. I hate when people say this. It means they have no idea about why the previous crash happened and then can't seem to grasp why that is no longer possible.

You see, the crash was because of over saturation as well as retailers being unable to do anything with the stock. EVERYONE was making games and I mean everyone. Making an Atari game was piss easy and you didn't even need to make sure that they worked, there was absolutely no regulation. People would buy games just because of brand recognition, but then be greeted by blank screens. Games were returned in the thousands and retailers started to say they would no longer be stocking games because no one was buying them after being burned.

In today's industry? This can't happen, it's heavily regulated, games HAVE to work or companies are likely to be sued. Oversaturation is no longer an issue because of things like Steam and other online platform distribution and people have grown to just ignore shitty games because we now have information on our side from reviews. Heck, we haven't even hit peak saturation, there is a lot of time between when games are released because companies realized it was better like that. You would get literally a month between Atari game releases because so many people were making them. Now, even though there are lots of people making games, you get maybe one game every few years from all these companies and it's spread out through the year.

An industry crash is impossible as it is now, you would need to have a complete dynamic shift to happen of people just refusing to buy games across the board.
