the characters near-uniformly run the spectrum from boring to annoying, the combat isn't that interesting, the "wow they actually had sex" novelty factor isn't that relevant anymore, and the plot is a self-indulgent mess even before you get into the disc 2 cuts

what it gets really right is the music (prime mitsuda) and the sense of exploring a big, cool world. i played it pretty late, but i still had a "oh, cool" moment when entering the desert marketplace for the first time, spinning the camera around in 3d while jumping around freely. you can really see the seeds of xenoblade's expert use of verticality, exploration, and sense of scale being planted here. that might not be enough for you, though

No, the way that Gears presents it's story to the player is pretty piss poor.
The pacing is horrendous and the delivery is often overly cryptic or convoluted for no good reason, and often told via text dumps rather than shown through action, despite the ability to display things happening generally being a strong point of video game story telling.
Seriously, every time pic related comes on screen and talks, you'll wonder what the point of their inclusion even is.

It all depends on the arts, arts leveling, and skills if they are still here. For sure killing grunts 5-10 levels lower will be way slower than usual unless there's a back slash-tier art that can kill in one hit.

I have actually not seen anyone say this about what we've seen of the gameplay from Blade 2.
Most people are disliking the changes which seem to slow down the flow of combat, and others are saying "it probably gets better 20 hours in" because JRPGs have a tendency to lock you out of gameplay improving systems til you advance some in the story.

I hope it's censored in the west and they don't include english subtitles in the Jap version.
