The way it SHOULD work is by just holding dash in the air, though holding it after your first jump isn't recommended. You have a total of three mid-air jumps from ground level, so it's much better to mix up the amount of jumps you do before you punch. Don't get caught doing three jumps every time or opponents might adapt to it and get easier counters.

I went in with no expectations and I'm quite impressed desu.

I'm glad that you're impressed. Expect death if you haven't played a testpunch, since most of us probably have a maximum of six days experience.

If you want a character good for beginners, play Springman or Min Min. Springman's got his comeback mode at 25% health, which can really turn the tables if you land a couple of hits. Min Min, on the other hand, has a manual deflect if you dash backwards on the ground, or any direction in the air. It's pretty great when compared to the rest of the cast, as you don't have to prepare it beforehand to make it work. It's all just timing and dodging. Also gives you some good air mobility.

The tournament was great, you can watch the weaker players start to adapt to their better opponents and improve rather than just trying to grab, particularly in the finals where the skyward guy was clearly at a disadvantage to zerk and then adapted to his style enough to make the last matches exciting.
Then the producer Yabuki put on a fucking clinic. The whole thing really demonstrated the game's learning curve.

Mummy was his chosen secondary character so I'd assume he was confident enough with him. He may have used Mummy to get a look at Yabuki's style while grab baiting and healing, and Yabuki had obviously been watching him play with Twintelle the whole time.
It only takes a flick of the wrist to punch in this game, he wasn't physically tired.

I like the approach nintendo takes with the minigames as each one is there to teach you something about the mechanics.

Volleyball is about timing and the basketball game is about countering grab spam and timing as well. I'm pretty excited to see how the game develops once people get these concepts down solid

The champ was pretty smart on choosing Mummy, switching things up when it was just a poking game throughout most of the matches. However, Mr Yabuki was even smarter on choosing Min Min. Getting those pokes with the Ramram interrupted the healing every time, while also staying so far out of range of a grab that it would be simple to counter. It really became more than just throwing punches in that match. Would've been crazy to see Yabuki get closer and kick away a few stray punches, though.

If you want high content single player, this game probably isn't for you, unless you wanna beat the campaign ten times, one of them being at level 7. You HAVE to beat it once at level 4 to unlock Ranked, but ARMS is primarily a multiplayer game. The fun comes from punching strangers online, and not so much punching robots.

On the bright side, you can access all of the modes now, so if you've missed out on modes like V-Ball or Hoops in previous tests, now you can enjoy those. I will agree, though, head-on 1v1 battles are the place to be.

In my opinion, it's the experience of an evolving stomping ground.

For the few first weeks, everyone's gonna punch and have fun because, for god sake, it's punching. A bit afterwards, though, people are gonna learn efficient ARM combos and strategies. There will be metas on top of metas, learning what counters what, and then the game will truly be alive then. Add free DLC stages and characters on top of that, and it'll slowly get more and more worth it.

The choice is on you, though. I see where you're getting at, effectively spending 80bux for the first year of the game might not be worth it now. Might absolutely be worth it later, though. You'd just have to either wait and see or dive in now.

every mode other than 1v1 is gimmicky and degenerate. Theres nothing fun about the 3 player FFA mode because its just 2v1, and in modes with more than 2 players, people just try to run and hide and run down the clock until its 1v1

smash bros is both good for casuals AND competitive BECAUSE of the item system. If you're playing a 4 man FFA, the items are perfect for shaking it up and forcing players to go aggressive or compete for a smash ball or whatever. Meanwhile you simply turn items off for 1v1

Arms has the same 3-4 player FFA mode but the only items are exploding bombs and aoe heal/charge buffs. Its stupid

Here's insta-counter for anyone that doesn't know it. Press dash after blocking a hit to reduce block stun, the block is still active during the start of the dash and can stop some more hits.

Blocking in general makes opponent's arms take longer to recover, though there are a couple arms that don't fall on block like the Slap arms.
