Well for one, most of what was announced was for 2017.

Even Xenoblade surprisingly is Holiday 2017 and the devs even said if they had 2 more weeks they could've got the English voices in for their demo so localization is probably pretty far along too.

Sony's presentation was 10% 2017, 20% VR 2018 and 70% early 2018-2018.

Yes Ni no Kuni 2 (a multiplat by the way) and Knack 2 are coming 2017 but they didn't showcase them sadly.

Also their closing trailer (Spiderman) doesn't stack up against Mario Odyssey's amazing trailer.

People don't understand how huge pokemon on switch is to pokefans. /vp/ was collectively losing its mind.

Sony went all out last year and I don't buy xbox anymore so I don't really care.

They announced new games that people despite wanting really badly, just weren't expecting. Almost nobody genuinely thought we'd hear about a new Metroid game, let alone 2. After Pokemon USUM zero people thought we'd be getting confirmation of Pokemon coming to Switch. As well as pleasant surprises like Kirby, Yoshi, and Rocket league. And even another pleasant surprise in showing that Switch is going to have cross-play with XBox and PC in some titles.

Only disappointment was no SMTV, Octopath, or Travis Touchdown game shown. And despite not giving a fuck about other games coming to Switch that I can already play on PC, it is concerning that they didn't show off almost any other 3rd party titles like a downgraded CoD WWII.

Bottom line is that big announcements, especially those out of left field are what win E3. And Metroid Prime 4 was huge and incredibly unexpected.

I wouldn't say that mainline poikemon to be a reason Nintendo won, but Metroid Prime 4 is equivalent to TLG, FFVII Remake and Shenmue III because after the last 2 badly received games it was a surprise that Nintendo still had plans for the series.

It goes without saying that the long drought between well received Metroid games makes it understandable to see how people would react in that matter.

Metroid 2 remake is the cherry on top though and getting both announced on the same day with Samus Returns only about 3 months out is a pretty big deal because it shows that the franchise truly isn't dead in the water and there's hope for other more smaller selling franchises in Nintendo's catalog.

Nintendo won because nothing that was announced by Sony was worth mentioning, and MS was just average. By default, all Nintendo had to do was announce something people care about, and they won. Instead, they announced Prime 4, Pokemon on Switch, and Metroid DS, which pretty much wrapped things up. It wasn't a hard year, as MS was the only competition.

This is all coming from a PC Idort who doesn't own any of the three consoles.

I think they "won" because Sony shot themselves in the foot with the same exact show from last year and because Microsoft has been trying less and less to compete with everyone else and trying to make consumers happy. I was getting the impression Nintendo wanted to make a strong showing with the Switch to avoid what they had on the Wii U, and showing their heavy-hitter IPs one after another on top of holding tournaments and regular gameplay/Q&A sessions I feel accomplished that; it totally helps that Metroid made a strong comeback after the disaster of Federation Force too.

This actually ticked me off though, and that's why I hesitate to call their E3 showing a great showing. From what I hear, VC's going to be a Netflix-like subscription where you pay a monthly fee and get to rent unlimited games, and I think that's a garbage way of handling it because it assumes players will be playing these old games over the one-time purchased newer games, it operates that you'll always be connected to a wi-fi source, and it'll be limited in what you can and can't rent from now til the end of the console lifespan, have fun playing Super Mario Bros. 2 for 5 years while you wait for that Mother 3 localization to drop. The best way of handling Virtual Console still remains a one-time fee for game and you can play it anywhere you go, no questions asked.

I mean, it's clear this is only a tech demo, it doesn't even have a proper name and theme yet but it already looks great. I just hope they change the flowers and red coins as collectables though, I actually think the fruit system from Yoshi's Story would work perfectly with this idea, or at least something similar that forces you to try and discover more secret stuff than just 5 or so flowers.
On the other side, I don't want to overhype myself with this like I did with WW, not that it was a bad game but it was waaay too short and it had some amazing ideas that were underused, the curtain levels were fun as fuck and the velcro-like level was top tier desing but they were just soo few of them it ended up being disappointing by the end.

But no one clearly won.
Sony showed some great gameplay & trailers, but lacked any big surprises (SotC was cool).
Microsoft showed a ton of games (many looked great, many looked boring). But they had barely any exclusives (the few they had were pretty meh)
Nintendo had a few good announcements, and showed great gameplay (Mario looks great, Kirby looks cool, Warriors is alright, Metroid 2 looks neat) But damn their presentation was awful, and some of the announcements were laughable. Announcing development on Metroid Prime and Pokemon was some investor meeting level shit. You don't put those awful announcement in your 'spotlight' unless you can actually show something (even a CG video -- literally anything).

I dunno, maybe ubisoft won, but even that wasn't mind-blowing.
