Example: There are 2 armies. Each army has a strongest warrior. Warriors are rated 1-10 in strength.

The invading warrior is alone, his strength is 10. The defending warrior has troops back him up, his strength is 8. The reinforcements on the defending side are all ranked at 1.

If you use your proposed strategy, then the invading warrior will use 8/10 of his resources to kill the strongest enemy first, leaving the defending force without their strongest warrior, but the reinforcements will eventually kill the invader.

If you play your strongest warrior last, he will have to fight lots of 1's first, which will drain his resources until he is eventually a 1 himself, and will be easily defeated by the 8 defending warrior, who can then be used to go on offense against the now defending invaders, who will have no strongest warrior any longer to defend them from the far stronger 8/10 warrior of the former defenders, who is now a 7/10 because it only took him 1 resource to defeat the enemy's strongest warrior.

This is as basic as it gets, if you would kill your best man/squad/legion right off the bat, you are fucking stupid.
