Decent. I'd say 5/10 maybe?

Nah, but it'd be fun as a learning experience.

Considering getting into netplay sometime soon, internet at current apartment sucks though.
Fortunately there are a decent number of people at my college who play, our scene's grown a bunch the last year. Friday night smash and drinking is fun.

Placing top 8 often at locals. Noticing steady improvement when I play

Yeah. Used to travel with my friends quite often, but they all have different schedules now. We still run events in the area though.

I am enjoying melee a lot more now that I shifted my focus from PM. I still play PM when it is available though.

Trying to bring back my cities scene currently. Kinda tough, but folks are starting to show interest.

Consistency. I've gone from tearing through 6 sets in a row with no breaks to losing to someone I 2-0'd in pools. My mental game is weak and I crumble easily.
My neutral is also kinda weak, and is mostly reliant on laser dash dancing.

I have a hard time stuffing approaches. Falco has a ton of tools to prevent this, but my opponent gains a ton of ground by just hitting me with a dash attack.

Im working on playing much safer in neutral, using my better hit boxes to stuff other attacks, and improving my defensive options.

My punish game and tech skill are both very good, but its bridging the gap in neutral that tends to be tricky.

Pretty bad. I joined a /vg/ netplay tournament and got trashed by a Bowser player because I didn't know how to chaingrab him.
No

I can't get over the fact that this game has no buffering. At least Smash 64 was pretty slow so it didn't hurt my experience with it, Melee is just irritating to play sometimes. And I got rid of my CRT so I can't even play it "lagless" anymore which turned me off from the game. Haven't practiced in a long time.

Make sure you can do retreating lasers. That might be what you meant by "dash dance lasers", but I've seen a lot of low-mid level Falcos that can't. I jump back and forth with lasers in neutral in place of dash dancing (though I mix them in here and there).
In terms of stuffing approaches, you mainly want auto cancel backair (really quick backair from short hop, no endlag if done right), and uptilt. They're really good for walling people out, but they require you to be turned around so it can be hard to transition between this and lasers.
The other option is you preemptively stuff them with laser/dair by jumping into them.
I also really like ftilt for spacing (probably because I'm actually a Sheik main), only do it at max range though. Laser > ftilt right at the farthest distance where it still reaches is really safe and great for gaining stage control. Catches them a lot because at that range they think you're going to jump with another laser or dair.

I use laser grab a lot. You don't get the best follow ups, but it makes people stop shielding your approaches so much. Also I guess practice shield pressure more, you're Falco, so presumably you should be able to power through his shield safely, but it's hard and takes work.
One approach I really like to use, but don't see used very often so maybe it's not good, is you laser approach normally, jump in at their shield like you would for dair, but instead shine on top of their shield and then jump out. If it catches them you can get a follow up hit, though not necessarily a huge punish because you just burned your double jump. If they jump out of shield you can usually catch that with dair too (and some players instinctively shine or grab OoS, you can just come down with dair then).
While it doesn't get the best follow ups, it's really safe if they do shield it, and lets you reposition and come down with dair. It seems meh whenever I think about it, but I get surprisingly good results with it.

They're not for everyone, but most of them are really chill and much better than the stereotype /v/ will present them as. If you don't mind it and maybe have a friend to go with, it's nice to try one out.

Post some netplay stories. Positive or not.

I got absolutely smashed the other week and decided I'd try to play some games at 5AM. I immediately got one guy from my region to accept a challenge and as it turns out he was hammered as well. For some reason, our ping showed <8 but the lag was obscene. So, we just pumped the buffer up to retarded levels and played anyway. There was no less than a full second of input delay, but we kept going. It was all read based. You could not perform any execution heavy shit whatsoever. We kept playing for an hour or two before I got to drunk to do the most basic stuff and went to bed.
It was probably the most fun I've ever had playing online.

We tried getting out back in 2015. They wouldn't let us of course. It can't continue like that, people are fed up. Every single young college graduate in greece can not find a job. You have physicists, talented mathematicians, pharmacists, all people who i personally know and even friends of mine who hope to get a job as a barman or pizza delivery boy. Either that or they Find jobs in other countries, which is what they do. All of the gifted people are leaving greece. I don't know what is going to happen, but it will happen soon.

Let's get this shit started. In my opinion, ledge grab limit is stupid because it'd be hard to enforce. The suggestion I've heard is that after a time out, they look at the ledge grab counter and the player who exceeds it is DQ'd.
If a player is in a situation where he knows he's grabbed ledge a lot, but finds himself backed up against the corner where a ledge grab is the safest option, should he not go for it in case it costs him the game? It just sounds weird to me.
>>
>>380657951
Just add a feature to 20XX Tournament Edition that makes you no longer able to grab the ledge after a certain number of grabs in a game.
>>
>>380657951
People are being real babies recently. The game is fine but HBox starts ledge camping people laser camping him and everyone loses their mind like the meta is broken. Give it some time to adjust.
>>
>>380658402
this is unnecessary, vanilla melee shows how many times you've grabbed ledge in the stats screen
>>
>>380658402
>Just reprogram and standardize a modded version of the game we've played vanilla for 16 years
>>
>>380658748

>>380657951
>If a player is in a situation where he knows he's grabbed ledge a lot, but finds himself backed up against the corner where a ledge grab is the safest option, should he not go for it in case it costs him the game?
The player needs to know what his options are.

>>380658585
I don't really know why it's a discussion at all. M2K has always been notorious for ledge stalling. The whole ''M2K on the ledge'' thing was a thing long before even EVO2013. I would say it's the influx of new players that's causing the uproar, but you see older players whine about it as well. I don't understand. If it wasn't a problem then, why is it now?
Not like we haven't experienced worse with Armada's YLink vs Hbox in GF, camping each other out for 8 minutes per game.
>>
>>380658595
So if someone wins a game by eliminating the other player's stocks, but then they check the ledge grabs the winning player went over the limit, they lose?

Players are going to make sure to check the grabs after every game?

>>380658748

Tons of regionals/locals run a mix of 20xx iso, memcard hacks (TE), and vanilla setups. A know a bunch of top regional players who always prefer to play on the vanilla setups. Creating a new standard for the game that every tournament will be required to run on all setups is a logistical nightmare.

>>380658963
Port priority doesn't need to be fixed and would be a difficult task to accomplish regardless.
>>
>>380659034

LGL would be for preventing ledge stalling, it wouldn't affect games where someone isn't doing that. It wouldn't be something stupid low like 10, the number I've heard thrown around the most is 45. You can't accidentally grab the ledge 45 times with no intention of stalling
>>
>>380659697
>Creating a new standard for the game that every tournament will be required to run on all setups is a logistical nightmare.

Th fuck are you talking about "new standard".

Tournaments set their own rules. If a tournament doesn't have all 20XX TE set-ups they can make rules reflecting that. For majors that are running only TE they can use the ledgegrab limit built-in mechanic.
>>
>>380659954
Every tournament is going to want to run the national standard ruleset; there are a bunch of TOs that want to ban wobbling but don't because it's allowed at nationals.

You either make a new standardized ruleset or you fracture the community.
>>
>>380657951
>>380658402

Three times has this argument been debunked now.
>>
>>380660285
>Every tournament is going to want to run the national standard ruleset
Then they can go ahead and do so.

>You either make a new standardized ruleset or you fracture the community.
Except that there's nothing to fracture the community here if the "national standard" is a ledgegrab limit. The only thing that would fracture it is a discrepancy between some tournies having one and some not having one, but really even that's not going to fracture the community since people will play by the rulesets of the tournament they attend. however here we're talking about something that is already working within the framework of their being a ledgegrab limit. The difference is between having the limit enforced by a referee and having the limit enforced by the game. Either fucking one of these things works, but having it enforced by the game where possible is easier and more convenient. There is no conflict here.
>>
>>380660654
I don't know what you're getting at. It's a fact that it shows how many times you've grabbed the ledge, you can't debunk that

>>380660520
>LGL isn't hard at all to enforce as the end game screen tells you how many times you grabbed the fucking ledge.

Okay so aMSa beats Ice at Big House in a game five set. However Ice insists on checking the ledgerabs. aMSa, having utilized Yoshi's ability to hang on the ledge and sling eggs repeatedly to push back opponents from the ledge, edgeguard, etc, grabbed the ledge 47 times in using his character essential edgecanceled eggs. The counter shows that aMSa has lost the match.

Is this acceptable?
>>
>>380660743
Again, check at least some replies before trying to jump into a discussion.
>>380658981
>So if someone wins a game by eliminating the other player's stocks, but then they check the ledge grabs the winning player went over the limit, they lose?
There is no reasonable way for the player to know how many times he's grabbed the ledge and if he finds himself in a situation where grabbing the ledge is the optimal option, but might be close to the ledge limit, what should he do? Take a wild guess, go for the ledge and risk losing the game because he went over? Or, do something stupid and lose the game anyway?
>>
>>380660935
yes, that how tourney rules work. if you break them you lose, how is this hard to understand?
>>
>>380660935
yes
aMSa should have known the risk in doing that.
It won;t be too hard to develop an internal clock of how many ledgegrabs you've done in a game anyways the more you play with such a ruleset.
>>
So how often do people actually run into games where a LGL was needed?
Is everyone just that salty about HBox vs Armada/Leffen?
>>
>>380661124
>>380661192
Are we also going to limit Puff's pound stalls? They obviously slow down the game.
>>
>>380661124
>>380661192
So basically you want to make sure that Yoshi is no longer competitively viable by imposing a rule to do so.
>>
>>380661053
grabbing the ledge in general is a riskier play than people make it out to be, especially for yoshi since his ledge play is so frame intense it's very easy for even players like aMSa to kill themselves occasionally. Except when it comes for puff vs much of the non fox cast where any puff can basically ledge grab infinitely for free.
>>
>>380661384
rising pound stalling is already banned lmao, just like peach bomber stalling; please read a fucking ruleset or go to a tourney before you talk
>>
>>380661403
Yoshi doesn't need the ledge though, yoshi will often die just for grabbing it, his ledge stall is NOT free and generally you should just let them be since they are more likely to kill themselves than get anything off of it.
>>
>>380661313
Wasn't it Hbox vs Chu that started the recent discussion about it? Don't see the problem, really. Timing out Ice Climbers who wobble should be encouraged.

Game & Watch

>How skilled are you?
Not great but not complete shit either

>Do you go to tournaments?
No. I usually play against friends but that's it.
>>
>>380661594
You're limiting Yoshi by a lot. His eggs are an incredibly powerful tool since they do so much damage and being able to chuck them without much risk is huge for the character.
The problem is that people are so opposed to time outs and I don't really know why. It's a game mechanic like any other. Sometimes there are time outs. It's just dependent on how people play. It will happen. Just live with it for fuck's sake. It's not like ledge grabbing is broken in any way.
>>
>>380659883
>LGL would be for preventing ledge stalling

So then it wouldn't be applicable if the game is won by taking all stocks?

>>380661594
>Yoshi doesn't need the ledge though

Yes he literally does, Ledge-canceled eggs are 100% essential to Yoshi in competitive play, especially against characters like Peach and Jiggs who can easily pressure the ledge not only from on stage but ever from above.

Removing the Yoshi ledge-canceled eggs is a death sentence to a character that already struggles competitively. So how do you build a ledge-grab limit around this?
>>
>>380646216
peach
non skilled
no i just play a ton of 20XX
>>
>>380661631
I guess it contributed, but HBox mainly stalled by jumping above the ICs reach, he could have stalled just as effectively without the ledge.

>>380661594
>Yoshi doesn't need the ledge though
He absolutely needs it to help get out of corner pressure because his shield and rolls suck, and good players like aMSa don't die just from grabbing it.
What is this logic though?
>Yoshi going to ledge isn't even good
>It's good that we make him even worse at it

>>380661561
Rising pound stalling is banned when you do it far offstage or under the stage, not if you do it overhead like HBox did against Chu.
>>
Anyone else really love Melee's graphics. I'm still blown away by how modern and impeccable they look. And I'm not even a big graphics guy!
>>
>>380661816
It's not about avoiding timeouts, it's about avoiding noninteractive play and game balance.

It's about preventing games like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTNaAUJZz5k
>>
>>380662273
Kongo Jungle is fucking banned though. That's an unbalanced stage for the reasons seen in the video. That's not the same as banning mechanics. Non-interactive play is part of some character's playstyle. The game isn't always about going in all the time.
>>
>>380657951
When m2k went to the ledge against Westballz he forced him to camp stage because if he goes even near the edge m2k has such an advantage is actually unfair.

Fox and Sheik can deal with it, maybe Marth, but almost every other character is fucked. Is unbalanced and stupid.
>>
>>380662273
>It's not about avoiding timeouts

Wait I thought it was about avoiding timeouts.

If it's not about avoiding timeouts then someone can take all their opponents' stocks but still lose because they use the ledge too much to do it? What sense does that make? Now you're trying to limit people from taking stocks the "wrong way"?
>>
>>380662271
Yeah, I think it looks great sans a few notable exceptions. Fucking Bowser and DK.
>>

Falco, Luigi, Pichu if I'm bored

>How skilled are you?
Not great. I can maybe 6/10 somebody on an equal skill level as me

>Do you go to tournaments?
No. I can't stand competitive Smash culture and also I suck.
>>
>>380662273
That game had nothing to do with ledge stalling and everything to do with DK64 being a bad stage.

That's an easy strategy for anyone to abuse there in the right matchups.
With ledge stalling, anyone who isn't m2k or hbox is putting themselves at a big risk against a similarly skilled opponent. We've seen Armada deal with it fine before anyway with dtilt stuff, and Mango usually just goes in and has been relatively even with HBox recently without games descending into campouts.
>>
>>380662592
I'll give you DK but bowser has never looked bad to me.
>>
>>380662592
I wish everyone would shutup about bowser looking different. Get over it, it's a different model, it looks badass not gay.

Curious though, what's wrong with DK?
>>
>>380662884
right but does ice climbers actually have the tools to challenge puff at the ledge?
>>

>>380662618
>I can maybe 6/10 somebody on an equal skill level as me
Wouldn't they definitionally not be equal to your skill level then?
>>
Youre all idiots.

No one is saying make the edge grab limit based on total grabs per game, but prevent continous ledge grabs from occurring, since it constitutes stalling. Same reason why wobbles are limited to 300%.

Make the re-grab limit 20 continous seconds per minute, or counted at continous10 regrabs.
>>
>>380662987
Melee DK looks kinda shit because his texture doesn't look remotely like fur, he's strangely lanky, too short. Even 64 polygon DK looks more like he has fur.

Smash 4 is really the first time DK has looked good in a Smash game.

Sopo's at a big disadvantage against Puff on the ledge, but then Sopo's at a big disadvantage against Puff anywhere really.
>>
>>380663067
good idea but good luck enforcing that without some kind of hack.
>>
>>380663067
>Make the re-grab limit 20 continous seconds per minute, or counted at continous10 regrabs

The problem with rules like this that aren't enforced within the programming of the game is now you need a fucking referee standing by to watch all off-stream matches just in case because you know there will be scummy fucks who will push the luck then deny it
>>
>>380663067
>No one is saying make the edge grab limit based on total grabs per game
>No one
Almost everyone making the argument is saying to check the total number of ledge grabs at the score screen at the end of the game, or implement a counter in 20XX.

Making a specific like 20 continuous seconds per minute requires either some really specific and arbitrary mod counter or a TO to watch every set played, or have players tracking it/calling it even if there's a close skirmish at ledge.
>>
>>380663154
I guess I see what you're talking about with his textures. It's like when I played double dash the first time. Everyone looked so plastic.

At the same time I really don't like what they did in brawl or Wii U. Fox looks incredibly gay and is so overdone, Mario looks fucked in brawl with all these stitches on his overalls. Something about overly detailed characters for no reason triggers me.

DK isn't terrible even though his texture is bland and legs are so tiny

LGL is only for pussies. The people complaining about ledge camping is usually spacie mains i.e.leffen/westballz. What's funny is that they play THE UNDISPUTED best character with the most overpowered move and have no right to argue for a ledge grab limit. Limiting hungrybox would make his wins that much sweeter. It's if you could imagine there being a shine limit. The autistic rage would be insane.

t. fox main who does okay at locals but hasn't gone to any tourneys to see how good I really am.

Shine grab, reverse waveshines, B reverse lasers, a bunch of stuff.

Another player told me afterwards I should have spaced out every 5 minutes of intense practice with a 5 minute rest to give my muscles time to adjust. I've heard of people grinding tech skill for hours though so I'm thinking my hands might be particularly delicate or something. Which is a shame considering my main.
>>
>>380666726
20XX is just a training pack that features some nice things like flashing white when successfully L-cancelling, or having characters shine a certain colour when they're in hitstun, making it easy to see when you're doing a true combo.
PM is another game and not a mod of Melee, but of Brawl. It's really good and a lot easier to learn than Melee due to the buffer. Characters are a lot better too, so you can pretty much pick any of them and you'll be able to do well, unlike Melee where certain characters are just fucking bad.
>>
>>380666726
20XX is more of a practice tool than a traditional mod. Immensely useful though. Has some extra stages and skins which can be fun too though.

>>
>>380664814
Young Link is MUCH better than Link. Young Link has some decent matchups since he's pretty quick and has good projectiles, Link only stands a chance when he's preying on matchup inexperience because he's so damn slow that he just gets invalidated as a character by top tiers.
However they're both fun to play and have some neat tricks.
>>
>>380668291
They're as bad as you think. It's really hard to approach because of Pichu's horrid neutral game, so most of the time I'm just hopping around to see if I can cheese a nair into an unsuspecting opponent and maybe lead into another aerial and then a grab. It's a bit easier against characters that aren't Fox, Falco, Marth, or Sheik, but those are like 90% of players so it's never a good matchup. I usually just get my ass handed to me, but it's fun to see what I can do.
>>
>>380668806
I don't know if I'd say Young Link is MUCH better. Link can snatch some good kills/edgeguards with up b, and he probably lives longer and deals with crouch cancel better.
>>
Falco

Not yet, but I intend on going to my first local next month. I'm going to get fucked so hard because I live in socal.

I've been thinking of switching to another character since my right thumb has been getting irritated easily lately, but fuck man I love the bird.
>>
>>380668853
I'd imagine Pichu has a rough time, if not worse against Peach too. Hard to combo/kill, CC dsmash invalidates most approaches, nair trades with everything in the air.
>>
>>380663531
If we dont need someone supervising the wobble counter, we dont need one for ledge regrabs.
>>
>>380667020
Im still recovering from tendonitis in both of my hands because of fox.

Its been almost a year now, the reason being i can't fully stop playing.
>>
>>380669173
That's because a wobble is:

1. Harder to perform.
2. Has an actual counter on screen that players and TO's can look at right there during gameplay to see if it's going to break a rule.
3. Is a slower process that is easier to pay attention to.

With ledge grabs a TO can't come over and see on the screen how many times the player has previously grabbed the ledge, the opposing player as well has to keep count in their head just in case among other things going on and has to be prepared to signal over a TO. If the TO is signalled over then it becomes a he-said she-said and the game grinds to a halt.

This headache could be avoided by just having a mechanic built into the game through 20XXTE if a ledgegrab limit is established.
>>

The thing is YL can effectively lame out Jiggs, Peach, and ICs if you're willing to run and throw forever.

Link has a retarded punish game on fast fallers.

They're probably best paired.
>>
If you didn't hear about it, Chudat is now a part of Team Liquid. And smashgod is Rishi.
>>
>>380669010
No Link can't get really edgeguard with up B's semispike unless your opponent is bad (or maybe rarely against captain falcon), they can just grab the ledge and punish you while you're stuck spinning around for a couple seconds. Even if you somehow hit with it at low %s your opponent can recover and punish, might as well just ftilt or something. It's good against day-1 players but that's about it. And the strong hit isn't that strong.

Link's recovery is great if your opponent doesn't know the matchup but he gets edgeguarded easily if they do.
Link and Young Link both struggle against crouch cancel but YL has better projectiles and mobility to deal with it.

It feels like some unknown force driving me to never stay on one, which is something to do with my mentality

I do my part to have good and chill discussion, they really are nice threads now and then, but often they're just full of shitposting. Need to make OP inconspicuous enough unlike "WHO STILL PLAYING THE BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER".

The smash subreddits have been getting really bad lately. r/ssbm used to be fine at least, but now they're nearly as bad as r/smashbros, but with this elitest/smug "lol r/smashbros is so bad and has shit opinions" while having just as bad quality.

Luigi

4/10 id say low-intermediate since work scheduling leaves me with no motivation to practice for locals.

Yes, highest is 1-2 . I do better in sm4sh and sfv. Though I'm dropping them for T7
>>
>>380656572

I've got friends who play Luigi

Basically the deal with this meme character is his ground game is retarded due to his wavedash and his air game is ass due to his airspeed

Luigi has a really solid follow up game on fast fallers, an RNG mechanic for recovert/kill, and a psuedorest that can be jab reset into

it's so impressive how melee has managed to advance. If I recall jiggly and peach weren't seen as viable back in the PC Chris days. At least not against a fox.
>>
>>380674802
Link gets more wins than YL because Link is the coolest and people play him despite being bad, whereas YL is too bad to be an optimal choice but also not cool enough to be popular despite that.

Sixx's avalon run was pretty cool though. Unfortunately he'll probably never take another game off of amsah.

I didn't go to many tournaments but I always felt that jiggly and peach were broken as hell back in the day due to certain counterpicks

I remember it was impossible to discuss anything with meleefags because whenever I suggested that some improvement could be made everyone would say stuff like "why don't you win mlg then" and "ken and isai are the greatest human beings on the planet, it's literally impossible to improve on anything they do" and all that sort of stuff

Top players are usually really chill. They've been playing with people in person for years and have met a ton of people both better and worse than them. They understand everyone starts somewhere and like to help new people in the scene. Something that I think online games lack is this interaction in person, which is part of what's held Melee together so long.

You're either trolling or you're stuck in 2009. Brawl is now this sort of quaint little janky memory in smash history, all the brawl players moved on to sm4sh or PM.

Also, IRL melee is super different from tourneyfag /v/; it's got a lot more normies and potheads than turbo autists and most of them are pretty nice dudes
>>
>>380677795
Hi James
>>
>>380679290
The wavedash is used to move without having to get stuck in dash, snap to ledge super fast, move across platforms quickly, dodge attacks, position yourself better for combos, etc.

Try playing Marth and WD-back F-smashing. They'll understand how dumb it is.

I've been to some, here in Chile can't find too many, at least on the capital, but good news is that our college LoL president wants to branch out into Smash and they are asking me to become a representant so I might scout some people into Melee in the near future
>>
>>380679290
Waveshine him across the stage.
>>
>>380679290
>"what are wavedashes useful for?"
Small spacing adjustments that allow for quick reactions. The easiest example I can think of is wavedashing back as Marth to avoid a grab and quickly punishing with an fsmash.

Also Luigi

Movement while keeping your standing actions available. You can't tilt, jab, or (directly) smash out of a dash/run, and out of run you slide to a stop and have slow turnarounds. Wavedashing allows you more precise repositioning, lets you move backwards without turning around, and leaves tilts/jabs/smashes available to you.
Can also be used to grab ledge quickly, and you can wavedash out of shield while you can't dash out of shield.
Also helpful for general movement, wavelanding on platforms, and is faster than running for some characters.
