They've made amiibo for every major game they've released since smash, I don't think it's that surprising. It seems that a lot of people like somewhat cheap but nice little figurines. The effect they have on the game is for an added bonus.

Amiibos aren't really that though and amiibos still sell very well.

Mario Party and Animal Crossing are the only actual games where you amiibos to play the game.

I think most people see them the way I do, just cool official merch that happens to unlock minor shit in games.
