Some smart dinosaur research people think that dinosaurs had feathers due to some anatomical comparisons with nowadays birds.

its an educated guess but still a guess.

We have scale skin impressions so we know they had scales. The distribution of the proto fuzz and the shape and length we see on most renders is a guess, probably not more of a guess as the shape and color of the scales for that matter. My point is we cant just make a dino and cover it in fuzz (or for that matter paint it whatever color we want) and then claim that they looked like that. We dont know. I prefer more conservative renderings until there is direct evidence of color and distribution.

We have fossils indicating proto-feathers in both of the main branches of Dinosaurs, so its likely that the common ancestor had them which means most Dinosaurs had the possibility of having them.

In terms of theropods, feathers are very likely, especially in maniraptorans which includes birds and their closest relatives including Velociraptor.

So when you picture a Velociraptor, imagine a smaller, less dangerous canadian goose with a better attitude.

Depends on whether their common ancestor had them, or if they developed them after they splintered off. And even if it was a common ancestor, which would mean they all had them, large dinosaurs like the TRex likely wouldn't have because their size means that insulation like feathers would have made them too hot.

Actually the dinosaur revolution dates back as early as the 60s. Growing up in the 80s I had some of the old books, but I also has books talking about fast and active dinosaurs like my favorite deinonychus.

Even back during the development of the Jurassic Park movie there was discussion of the fact that at least certain dinosaurs should have feathers. The book however was wildly inaccurate in its depictions already and the movie decided to error on the side of the book and made Velociraptors big and scaly to make them better movie monsters.

No. Certain theropods may or may not have had feathers, but those "feathers" were almost certainly not the asymmetrical flight feathers commonly featured in pop feathered dinosaur art. Additionally, there has been a recent discovery of scaled skin impressions of T.rex that do not support the feather theory. Feathers did evolve somewhere in that line, but that by no means can be generalized to "most dinosaurs."

They probably weren't doing very well by the time the asteroid hit, which just sped up the inevitable. Yeah, here's the deal with that:

Feathers and scales don't grow on the same place. If there are scales there can't be feathers there on that same spot. That's why birds don't have feathers on their legs.

For feathers to grow you need bare skin without scales. All fragments of T-Rex skin found from it's ass to it's neck show scales.
As much as i am a proponent of the feathered dinosaur discoveries, it would seem that the most recent discoveries have flipped the famous Tyrannosaurus Rex back to a scaly animal reptilian giant rather than the big fluffy one we've become used to in the recent years.

Honestly, i didn't even expect this outcome, as it seemed fairly logical that, from T-rex's feathered ancestors, we could assume Rex had them too, but now actual skin impressions have been found that were the missing pieces of the puzzle.

Pretty much what they did with T-Rex, and now they found skin impressions that basically debunk the fluffy Rex theory.

The idea that Rex had feathers was based on nothing but circumstantial evidence.
Paleontologists found feather imprints in much smaller ancestors of T-Rex from the early cretaceous, so they pretty much assumed that this trait must have remained constant through out the blood line, since there was no evidence of T-Rex skin, until now.

Species like the famous velociraptor, though, have been proven to have had feathers from more than just circumstantial. They actually found quill knobs in the arms of velociraptors that are direct evidence of fully developed feathers.
