Does Naughty Dog really not understand Nintendo's business model? Yeah Nintendo only makes one Mario platformer per generation and you can probably outsell it if you make three successful games yourself, but Nintendo's real strength comes from leveraging that platformer into a bunch of other IPs. Mario 64 leads into sales for Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Yoshi's Story, Mario Party, etc. etc. etc. That's why despite being "dominated" by Sony for two generations they were still more profitable.
