That said, your 4670 clocks very similarly to the 6600, but can't make use of faster RAM. The 4670 has a lower potential bus speed, but it is likely that you will need to buy new and very expensive RAM and/or a new motherboard in order to make use of that faster bus speed, not to mention a fast SSD.

Your 4670 is also slightly better on TDP than the 6600, which gives you some thermal headroom should you decide to overclock.

The integrated GPU in the 6600 performs significantly better than what is in your 4670, but the enhancement is wasted if you elected to install any sort of decent dedicated card.

I still use an i5 2500k personally.

The only reason you'd need something better is if you insist on playing something at higher than 1080p.
It's a good res and on anything less than around a 34 inch screen there's little noticeable difference no matter how high you jack the resolution.

Typical performance bottlenecks for gaming is usually GPU first, everything else second. Not having enough RAM will cause constant page/swap hits, which is amplified by slow storage. Having slow storage will make games and levels/assets load slower, and stutter depending on how the game streams content. Having a slow CPU will make everything slow, but why are you encoding video while playing Crysis anyways?

Very few games are cpu intensive. The "game" logic is run by the cpu and most of the time the most expensive logic is the AI and as you can probably see AI has been relegated for years. Though that's not completely the fault of "lazy" developers, truth is consoles have some seriously underpowered cpu's. This is why some RTS's are pretty CPU intensive, the more detailed the units are in their behaviour the more expensive the game is. So as long as you don't play RTS games I wouldn't recommend an upgrade.

I originally had a 560ti but it broke after like a couple years I think it was and have been using a 770gtx ever since. I mean there's some minor issues in that I can't go full speed pci-express 3 because motherboard came out before that but it doesn't impact performance signifigant enough to notice it. If anything I do need a SSD but I'm still perfectly fine with a mech one.

In terms of gaming, the PC platform had been stagnant for quite a number of years anon. Considering also that most games are developed for consoles first, and you can be absolutely sure that an i5 will be enough for the foreseeable future. The closest thing to a 'change' we had was the PS3's cell, but unfortunately that required too much effort to develop for, was too expensive to produce and the memory limitation didnt help. Thats why Sony went back to the PC platform. The only way were gonna see innovation is if big companies decide to do R&D.

Nope. Most new engines support more than 4 threads and developers are using this as a crutch to avoid optimization, take BF1 for example. Even in a small TDM server, an OC'd i5 bottlenecks at around an average of 130fps with dips into the 80s.
