I think they're trying to make a definitive Mario Universe.

Judging by the world map on this poster, the Mushroom Kingdom is included, and the other kingdoms are islands/continents. This is the World of Mario. And when you think about it, they're taking past game worlds and building on them.

And I'm sure there's even more worlds, we saw a clip of an underwater world in the last trailer, and the song hints at the moon, which also might be the Cap Kingdom. The rabbits are most likely from the moon, and Cappy is very likely involved with them, given he has the same eyes/white color scheme.
