I still haven't outgrown them, I just feel the games are overall worse and don't offer what kept me entertained 10+ years ago. It's all unimaginative shit now. Mario Kart was insanely fun because Mario Kart was new. Mario Kart 8 doesn't have a shred of that left. They just gave the fuck up on the innovation side of things.

Also remember Nintendo didn't used to see/treat itself as childish. That's something that just kindof accumulated over time.

PS4 for any game you want to play "seriously", and Switch for any game you want to play for pure fun.

Nintendo knows what they're good at: making games that people of any age can find enjoyment in. Games that appeal to the widest possible audience, and that's what they do. Incredibly well.

Mario, Zelda, etc are less about the characters and more about the actual game. The gameplay, the fun, whatever. The fact that you play as a mascot is them declaring that your character does not matter, the game is what matters. Mario doesn't have a cinematic experience dedicated to his PTSD or manic depression after Peach has been kidnapped (and raped) for the thousandth fucking time. This works for a game like Evil Within, where the characters and story are just as important as the gameplay.

I think to sum it up, Nintendo make video games. Most everyone else makes long movies where parts of it are controlled by the player.

If you're excited about Kingdom Hearts 3 you haven't outgrown anything.

After n64. I didn't care for any of their 3D offerings on GCN. My family eventually got a Wii for Wii Sports and casual shit which was a fun time playing games with non gamers. The only games I bought and enjoyed on the Wii were SMG and Sin and Punishment. I've gone back with Dolphin to play GCN games I missed and I really didn't miss much of anything, single or multiplayer. Wii U and Switch don't appeal to me in the slightest, nor handhelds.

Literally the only good things that might be comig to the Switch are Metroid Prime 4, and we haven't seen a single screen of it. Everything else ranged from being okay (Mario Odyssey) to outright terrible (Arms, Splatoon). Not a single worthwhile investment on the console. Even with the official (tm) Metroid 2 remake, it's already showning signs of being inferior to AM2R. Definitely cause for concern, even from a Metroid fan.

I'm actually going the opposite way somewhat.

Liked Nintendo growing up then kind of got bored and tried out different things. Until about 3-4 years ago the company was pretty much dead to me, a company that releases same old boring Mario over and over again, that has such a childish aesthetic to everything they do.

Recently though I've gotten really bored of games with so-called serious storylines and more interested in Nintendo. Nintendo reminds me of when gaming was "cool", not bad, not offensive but cool.

So I've kind of grown back into Nintendo.

Compare that to Mario Kart 64 though. 8 might be the best one but anti-grav compared to how innovative the first iterations of the series were it doesn't even register. They added a new product to their line and it nailed that type of game so hard you still see people playing it at parties 20+ years later. They havent done anything that groundbreaking in a long time. They're just sitting around collecting bread off the shit they came up with 20 years ago.

I never had to outgrow them because after the SNES all I owned was PlayStation and then an Xbox 360 last gen. But I did always buy Nintendo handhelds for Pokemon and I continued the tradition with a Switch. That being said I'm not really a fan of any Nintendo franchise that isn't Pokemon. I've never even played Metroid.

I've been off and on most of my life

I started gaming with my parents Atari 2600. I was really young back then, and games were really shitty, so I didn't like it much. They got me an NES for my 6th birthday, and it was a lot better, but the games were still very hard and I was young. I don't think I managed to beat a single game except Mario 3, and I had all the Marios, Zelda, and Mega Man 2

I got an SNES the year it came out and it was and probably still is my favorite console ever. It got me addicted to JRPG games like FF2 and 3, Chrono Trigger, Mana, etc. Not to mention Super Metroid is the best game ever made

I got into PC gaming right before the N64 came out, and got super addicted to Quake multiplayer. Being able to play games with people over the internet was an unbelievable experience and something Nintendo was still decades away from offering. The N64 came out and Mario 64 was really fun but the console library seemed so empty. OoT came out and I really had no interest in it. It seemed really derivative next to ALTTP and I just wanted to play on my PC anyway. I sold my N64 with Mario 64 pretty much being the only game I had played for it

I picked up a GC when they were only $99 along with Sunshine and Wind Waker, and they are and still remain my favorite Mario/Zelda ever. But I found the GC to be yet another weak library with really nothing to play compared to the old SNES days. I tried to play Metroid Prime but couldn't because I found the FPS experience with a controller to be so remedial compared to my days on the PC

FFXI came out and I got sucked into MMO hell for nearly 10 years, during which I played almost no other game. I got a Wii on sale and enjoyed the hell out of Mario Galaxy, but I couldn't stand the Wiimote enough to play any other game. I found the Zelda games on the system to be extremely lacking

Be honest.

For me, it was after the PS3. I was 19 at the time. They became a no games platform. And now, I just simply don't enjoy their movie games anymore with their black-coated aesthetic, their excessive tutorials, and dumbed down difficulty.

I grew up with only Sony, so I never knew of anything else, but since I dropped them, I've been discovering a plethora of games I'm saddened to have missed out on during their prime.

Wii U seemed to promise a return to form so I reluctantly bought one. It surprisingly had one of the more fleshed out Nintendo libraries in recent memory, but still was very disappointing. I enjoyed games like W101 and Bayonetta1/2, types of games that I hadn't really experienced before. But Nintendo's classic titles were sorely missing. Mario 3D World wasn't the 3D Mario I wanted at all. It felt more like the NSMB games poorly converted to a 3D format. And BotW being delayed for 2 years kind of left a bad taste in my mouth, though I ultimately enjoyed it. I can't say it's my favorite Zelda game, especially since it doesn't even feel like one, but it was a lot of fun

I'm not sure how I feel about the Switch. I've never cared for handhelds, not since I was a kid. And right now it seems like a duplication of the Wii U. Metroid is once again a Prime, which I have very little interest in (maybe if I could use a KB+M...), and it's years from coming out anyway. Odyssey looks amazing but it's probably the single game I have any interest in for the foreseeable future.
