As good as 5 is, 7 has more details and better music.

7 has more music but that doesn't mean it's better. 5 has superior end-boss music and the better world map music. 7 has more details because it's on a more advanced console, but everyone looks like Popeye!

Is 4 standalone? I've got it on Steam and am between starting 3 or 4.

Most tracks in 7 are emotionally charged. 5 has a few of those even through the chiptune, but most of 5's melodies just fall flat. I would expect every game to have a World Map and Final Boss theme that excels in its own right. And for details, I don't just mean graphical fidelity (which is an apples and oranges comparison anyway), I'm talking about interaction with various locales and how NPC's can affect the journey. Not to mention more Items and sidequests, and things like Materia setups giving slightly more depth (barely) than the Job system (despite Jobs being the easier to balance mechanism).

Do IV first, III is more of a prototype version for the mechanics that were perfected in V
>>380610585
you don't need to play any other games in the series to play it. 4 has a direct sequel though, and to play that, you need to play 4.
I would highly recommend playing a version that's not the steam version, though, as it's a port of the worst version of the game (mobile port, which is a DS port). I'd recommend the GBA version (more content) or SNES version (classic) instead.

>NPCs affect the journey in FF7
not any more than any other final fantasy game. every FF game from 4 to 10 (and 12) behaves very similarly in this regard.
7 is not special. It WAS, back in its day, but so were 1, 3, 4 and 6 in their days.
>>380608046
It was good for its time. Even as someone who adores the ever loving shit out of this game, I have to say that it hasn't aged that well, especially the graphics. This becomes even more apparent when you compare it to a game like Spyro.
If someone played it now, I don't think they would be able to appreciate what an experience it was the time. There's still plenty going for the game though.

Thanks i'll keep that in mind. Not gonna lie, i do enjoy the 3d overhaul, but i'm all about more content. Reckon i'll check'em out 'n do some comparisons.
>>380608046
Sure
>>380608046
I cannot say. I've replayed it so much that there is a certain familiarity that doesn't allow it to shine as bright as I know it should. I can no longer be objective about it. If I must I'm going with false. It's my fourth favorite. Thus faux-objectively it loses to V in flawlessness and VI in terms of cohesion of themes, world and NPCs plus the gameplay is slightly more volatile and therefore exciting in VI.

7's NPC's had a greater volume of effects. Obviously there is too much of a good thing, but 7 never crossed that line (even if the dolphin jump at Junon was a little ridiculous).
>>380608046
true but i prefer 8 and 9
