It costs money to maintain an online service, and more and more people joining it means it costs more and more money to maintain.

The only reason why PC doesn't have paid online (outside of MMOs for much of the same reason as consoles) is because most server costs are actually paid out of pocket by consumers themselves buying server space. Console users aren't willing to do that for their games, so the game publishers/developers and the platform holders themselves have to front the cost.

The only thing that doesn't make sense is being charged for an online service when your game uses P2P, but then I assume that's more related to support costs than anything. Because the PS3's online service was fucking small back then. Didn't really have a massive player base, so it didn't cost much to maintain.

Fast forward to this gen. Gaming is more popular than ever, and the PS4 is poised to take the top spot. Shit is about to get a lot more expensive to maintain, and Sony is losing money from every other business that isn't games, which means they don't really have much in order to front the costs themselves.
