Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
Also google sh2 xpadder there's a couple of buttons to set for comfort play.

If all else fails and you can't get your controller to work, lookup joy2key (make sure to get the right version, there's some malware posing as it out there.) it'll let you map your controller to keyboard and mouse.

Team Silent has simply gained my absolute respect during these years. Seeing their interviews, the Making Of -videos, and just by playing their games, it has become clear that these people loved what they did, and they did what they loved extremely well, with passion. Guys and gals who worked with them have described them to be "workaholics" and "detail maniacs", and you can feel it when playing their titles.

Meanwhile, every single later, western sequel has been akin to the god-awful SH Movie: lets take bits and pieces from this and that, and smash them together to make something that's supposed to look like an SH title! Fuck the lore, rules, basic sense or even good gameplay design!

The first 5 minutes of S1 should be enough to demonstrate the issue.

To do even the most basic stuff, you need to pull all sorts of stunts, and / or press same Action key numerous times in a row just to get things started. And sometimes, your assumed mission objectives are super vague, and there's absolutely no room for any improvisation; in Blood Curse for example, I was stuck in this tiny ass house with a zombie with gun waiting in a tiny room with a key item. I tried rushing it, exploring alternative routes, attracting it out, etc.
Failed and died numerous times, until I checked out the answer online: apparently, you had to tweak a goddamn cuckoo clock to get the bastard out, and then sneak in.

And that's just one example. It doesn't help that the overall performance is bad, and coupled with cant-see-shit-captain visuals (darkness, fog, filters, split-screen for the sight-jacking, narrov FOV...).

Personally always felt SH3 was one of the worst in the four mainline games. Heather is just annoying as fuck, and the game is easily the shortest. It has a few cool moments like the mirror room, The Glutton and all, but even SH4 is more creative really. Only thing I like especially about SH3 is the soundtrack.

SH2 > SH1 > SH4 > SH3 > Origins > Homecoming > Shattered Memories > Dog Shit > Memepour

SH1 is a masterpiece. SH4 is something you'll want to play just to get the last bits of creativity out of the franchise, but it's an extremely hit-or-miss game with a lot of unwelcome changes to the formula (with a couple of fun changes/new ideas). Story is great, but the game is very frustrating.

However the chance you'll hear it in any given playthrough is about 1 in 4. I think this has already been explained. What the whisper is saying is "See my dead wife and come home, do some laundry, do some...". I think it was just added in to add to the spooky atmosphere. The japanese translator thought it was probably one of the voice actors (Guy Cihi, James' voice actor possibly? That's just my opinion) talking to himself in the recording booth, maybe to get into character. It was unscripted so the Japanese sound recorders probably didn't know what it meant and probably added it in cause it sounded cool.
If you want to believe that it was intentional, maybe it's supposed to be James' inner thoughts before or after killing Mary.
