In all seriousness though this is exactly why (and in truth the only reason at all) that pc is better than console.

There's not just one corporation in power who decides "alright, now we see what newly developed features were popular, time to end this generation, force an upgrade in our usage through discontinued support, and charge for those features."

It's literally how consoles ended up with paid online. Everyone had it for free at one point.

Really good point, but Microsoft's unique position more or less attempted to make Xbox the dedicated games PC. It's a strategy they're still pursuing now, by trying to unify the Xbox and windows 10 stores in order to amalgamate pc games into Live users to facilitate further repositioning and monetisation down the line.

The only thing that's really standing in their way is how violently competitive the pc market is when it comes to double-A (mid size) games. The mud sized devs are too small and far too numerous to get tired up in exclusivity deals, and they're so desperate to find their audience they will release on as many well established platforms as possible, which has made controlling who Windows users come to for their games very difficult. I think as soon as they solve that, pc will see the rise of paid "options" for existing services
