IMO game is slow to start, but then again I spent a very long time finishing every side quest, which were not amazing but provided neat info, world building and character development.
Combat is ok but hoped there was a dedicated counter button, probably would make the game even easier than it already is, but it just feels inconsistent compared to MGR.

Just finished ending A with about 28 hours or so of playtime, most of the time I felt constantly over leveled so I didn't get to truly enjoy most bosses, feels bad since they seemed to be really well done, which also deterred my emotional involvement in the last fight, since i beat the dude in a couple of hits

I'm about twelve hours in, just cleared the forest kingdom. The game's very, very good, yes, but sadly not quite perfect.

The camera trickery often makes it hard to see what's going on and the side quests force you to go through inhuman amounts of backtracking. Which in turn highlights the fact that the maps are pretty bare and empty, with little enemy variation and not much to look at. More different kinds of plants and wreckages would've made the levels a lot prettier and more pleasant to explore.

The localization is also kinda mediocre, yet again. I'm playing with Japanese voices and the subtitles continuously try to portray 2B as some kind of a generic, angry hardass when she's not like that at all. The translation also spoils Taro's characteristic minimalism by turning simple utterances into something verbose and quippy.

But yeah, the haunting atmosphere, fluid combat, and interesting story alone make it an outstanding experience.

I am a secondary and immediately played Nier after Automata, people are not kidding when they say it has one of the best vidya OST of all time.

Automata has its shining moments too (A2/9S duo second to last boss fight and Entertainment Park boss) but goddamn it still can't top the original Nier.

No, he's pretty spot-on. Automata has softer battle tracks than the first's. I do think it excels in more relaxed toned areas like the various camps or just environment-exploring, but NieR also did very well in that regard. There isn't anything as pants-shittingly climatic as the moments in the original NieR so all the music has even less impact. It's still pretty well up-there in terms of music quality, it just pales in comparison to the original's strong tracks. It's a fantastic game but also overrated.
9S' part was terrible gameplay wise.
The map got boring after the first playthrough.
Loads of fetchquests for no reason.

Combat is fluid and responsive, and while the skill ceiling isn't as high as something like Bayo or W101, it's still got a lot of room to play around with. Putting the difficulty onto hard is probably the best way to play if you want to stay engaged with it.
Music is stellar, but the sound and music design is what makes it really shine. Each track has about three or four variants to it, which will play depending on situation, if you're engaged in combat, if an area changes due to story events, etc. The way it's pulled off in game is great.
Story is pretty interesting, but I'd definitely recommend playing the original Nier beforehand. You don't need it dto understand any of the events in Automata, but some very emotional points in the game rely on knowledge of the orginal.
Sidequests manage to all be varied and interesting. There'a a few which just boil down to short collectathons, but most of the time, you'll probably have most or all of the stuff you need. Sidequests shine narratively, where each manages to fit into the theme and story of the game, some unlock new areas, mess around with the game mechanics, have you fight unique enemies, etc. But definitely play each sidequest for the writing and story you get out of them.

Honestly, I couldn't get into the game.
Got 2 different endings, felt the game to be really mediocre. Couldn't see myself going on with this game. Youtube the "true ending", felt like I didn't miss anything.

I dunno, game just didn't do it for me. Gameplay was okay, but only because games like DMC 3 put a bar so high for action games, I feel it may never be topped.

Currently doing second playthrough from level 1 on very hard. Just beat Adam and it's harder than I thought it would be.

Does anyone know if bare fists can be upgraded in any way? It's probably my favourite weapon in the game but the damage is much lower than proper weapons and other fist weapons don't look that good for the most part, not to mention the lack of kicks.
