It's basic training for anyone that's taken a tech course, which is why Jason gets shit for it, he's entry-level ignorant.
You avoid it because points of failure can be a real bitch to ID in a set up, so if you know your cables are all fine you don't have to trace the lines or faff about switching them out.
I mostly do audio and lighting, with a little data, and anything short of speakon can't handle being treated like the way Jason recommends without risk of fault.
Easier just to avoid it being a possibility.
