Mobile vidya's been dealing with a "soft crash" for a few years now, in the sense it's not a serious industry-stopper but it's a massive loss in altogether value until something comes in to change that. The freemium meme makes profits even harder, and there's generally not much competition to spur development further. Half of the money made for mobile was due to novelty, and of that money, most app-makers got their money via advertisements from other app-makers in a twisted circle that couldn't sustain itself for long anyway.

Even SinoAlice, a really big mobile release that topped the lists for quite some time on both iOS and Android, wasn't a very big seller in terms of popularity. Combine the general instability of how they maintained profits plus the wearing off of novelty PLUS dealing with a new novelty that's been getting big in the past few years (Virtual Reality) and you're basically watching the invisible hand do its work. The only shot mobile really has a chance with in resurgence will be Augmented Reality, which we'll probably see more of by at latest 2020. AR has proven to be significantly popular with Pokemon Go, and that's one of the first real cases of it (by a company that was playing around with the concept for a few years anyway, so they had plenty of R&D already) and the only other major AR company I know of that's doing anything is in total media blackout with NDAs and security on everything. I can't even remember their name, all I know is they released one image of their program and it's blurry as Hell. All I really know beyond that is Google is also very interested.

you're probably underestimating just how unbelievably shit the video games industry was leading up to '83. Horrible, non-functional games being shit out constantly and didn't have fancy graphics to make them seem good on the surface, dozens of consoles with redundancies and companies cannibalizing their own products, and almost no console maker control over the games made for their system.

I feel like that sort of thing can't really happen at the scale it did again, it was only possible in such a new market where nobody knew what the hell was going on or what they were doing. Modern video game companies have figured out what works, and it seems very stable. Stale, but stable.

Nintendo is the only purely videogame oriented company that's still in the console business, and thats because they've amassed a fortune over the years from being successful at the console game, and practically rival Disney for brand recognition and character recoignition . They can afford flops.

Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's Playstation are basically only a small part of their overall businesses.

Sega meanwhile, has NOT been as successful as Ninty. They suffered pretty hard after the Genesis, and were never truly able to match it's success, and then the PS2 simply killed the Dreamcast with it's DVD player.

Now Atari is in a weird spot because they have been playing a lot of musical chairs as to who owns them. And theres like 3 different branches or something.

I had a dream about a new Atari console years ago. It was pretty standard except for one thing.

The controllers had a removable central chunk where the keypad used to be on Jaguar controllers.

It just slid out and could be replaced by modules like an analog rotary dial for Tempest/Breakout/driving games, a trackball for Rampart/Centipede/Missile Command, etc.

This meant a variety of true-to-arcade control options but the slide out modules were cheap since they utilized the gamepad's wireless chip and batteries instead of needing their own.

The games were all stylized neon TRON lookin remakes of classic Atari IPs but with expanded gameplay complexity like how Geometry Wars expanded on Robotron.

Does anybody actually think this wont be just a compact re-release of one of their consoles, or an all-in-one thing?

As much as I would love to have a true newcomer on the console scene, they obviously arent doing that.

As much as some of us might love it for the sheer balls of it, they arent going to put wood paneling on a console they actually want to compete.
