.hack//GU Last Recode will be a HD remake of the .hack//GU trilogy for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Lots of QoL changes compared to the original games. http://gematsu.com/2017/06/hackg-u-last-recode-remaster-collection-announced-ps4-pc
Possible new form for Haseo teased.
Hints at cut content being finished and added in this time around.
More .hack projects in the works but currently being kept under wraps.

Git hype.

>Famitsu: What’s the reason for you remastering G.U. this time, out of the many series titles?

>Matsuyama: .hack// had a protagonist that was caught up [in a plot], and I think it was to be played with a sense that “Kite = Yourself” (as in Kite is really the player’s own character). >That’s why the frontage was also wide.

>But in the next series G.U., we wanted to make it a title where fans would get deeply attached to the protagonist and other characters, so we made it with high heat like a shonen manga. It didn’t sell as much as .hack//, but the fans’ enthusiasm towards the characters and storyline is the highest in the series. That’s why if we are to do a reboot from among the series, G.U. ought to be the most suitable.

>>380541080
GU is needs a lot less work to bring up to current standards, path of least resistance. Make no mistake, this is a trial game, they want to test the waters to see how successful the game will be before they go all-in on the series again, like they used to back in the day.

Regarding the stuff they wanted to do with GU that they haven't been able to yet, I can't help but think they're talking about the story content that made it into the novels that was left out of the game. There was a whole storyline in there about Tomonari being corrupted by Ovan, and a unique area that went with it that didn't make it into the game (but funnily enough you could still go there with the keywords). While I don't expect them to add in the off the wall shit like Ovan's complete meltdown or his speech about Sleeping Beauty's rapist, but big things like that would definitely be on the table.

Am I the only one not happy about the gameplay changes in Vol2 and 3 being in included in Vol1? I liked that the 3 games had slightly different gameplay since it avoided the problem IMOQ had where the gameplay was exactly the same for all four games. There was even a convenient lore reason for the gameplay changes since Vol2 and 3 were version updates to The World.

.hack// has always been as dead as possible outside of Japan, so it was a no show at E3. We only know about it because it coincidentally happened to be in the latest Famitsu.

Since it's PS4 and PC only, I'm surprised they didn't show it off at Sony's conference.

Especially since if we don't buy this, the series dies and gets replaced by SAO

>.hack// has always been as dead as possible outside of Japan
I dunno, man. Sounds like it was pretty popular at first.
>>Matsuyama: The concept of all 4 volumes of .hack// was valued not only in Japan but also overseas.
>Uchiyama: I never thought it would sell so well in America. Bandai at that time excelled in selling game adaptations of popular anime and manga to the world, but spreading works created by ourselves to the world was not necessarily our specialty.
After that is down to their own incompetence; shipping less and less copies with each volume of the games and pulling out of Europe entirely when it came to GU was such a bad move, I can't help but wonder if they were intentionally trying to kill the series overseas.
>>

This song give me immediate flashbacks to seeing the flying giant zone in for the first time. Shit was fucking terrifying and I nearly got my face bashed in by a mob I wasn't paying attention to.

That was one really cool thing about IMOQ's fields that made them a lot better than GU's. If only the dungeons weren't the worst shit ever. Imagine being 13 and still having faith in humanity, and finding out that said roaming dungeon was actually just the usual innards dungeon shitshow with a superboss at the end.

Because it's impossible to look exactly like Kite and Haseo. It's not possible to have the same colors as Kite, and you can't have the wave symbols on his pants because those were specially grafted on by the Book of Twilight. Haseo's Xth form isn't even supposed to exist in the game, so it's impossible to have that model.

Keep playing IMOQ to get prepared for the G.U. remaster. They're pretty independent from each other as far as plot goes, but there are a lot of nods to it (and the rest of the series as a whole, it's a very intertwined series with a lot of lore). For instance, the main character of G.U. is the same guy who played Sora in the original series, Yata was Wiseman from IMOQ, Kuhn was Mai's boyfriend in a coma from Liminality, Nuke Usagimaru and Rachel become a famous comedy act IRL, etc., etc.

That reminds me, I fucking hated how Takumi was given pretty much fuck all as a character because they felt the need to use him to advertise the Digimon card game. He was however the first in a series of .hack 10 year olds that are way more competent than they have any reason to be.

Nope. In R:1, Twin Blades were pretty good. Fastest class, decent power, great jacks-of-all-trades and useful in just about any situation. Plus, they had more physical elemental skills than any other class. In-universe, Twin Blades were considered to be one of two classes ideal for solo play, the other being Heavy Axes. As for how they ACTUALLY play in the .hack games themselves, they are broken. The game is unbalanced as fuck ans Twin Blades are just too good at everything.

In R:2, Twin Blades were re-balanced to be fast but have low damage, health and magic on anything that isn't a magic-based character is worthless. But in actual game that we play, Twin Blades were worthless. Because see, here's the thing: attack animations are the same for everyone of the same class. So all Twin Blades have the same attack animations, all Blade Brandiers have the same attack animation, there is no difference in terms of speed. So if you create an Adept Rogue with Twin Blade as one of his classes, you basically have a Twin Blade that can INHERENTLY do more damage, tank more damage and, if you give a shit about that, is better at magic than a Twin Blade. Obviously, it doesn't reflect how the game actually is in-universe, but basically, Haseo is just better than Alkaid in every single fucking way, balance-wise. Alkaid is worthless, balance-wise.

And the way the damage formula worked, if you were even slightly underleveled for a fight almost every single attack would deal only a single point of damage. It sounds like they're reworking it so things are more balanced in that regard.

The only way I can think of a .hack MMO working is if it kept the action rpg gameplay, had no open world, kept the player hubs, and made it so that the gates made randomly generated rogue like dungeons that were pretty big and kept the miniboss at the end.
Also PK'ers could invade the dungeon. Basically make fucking chalice dungeons from Bloodborne into an MMO.

Nah, G.U. is better than the originals, and already look pretty nice as it is, since they were late PS2 games that used heavy cell shading

The IMOQ engine is so old that it looks super unsettling at high resolutions, and the gameplay doesn't hold up at all. They'd need to be completely remade, or at least done on the G.U. remaster engine, and that's gonna take a lot more time and money than just fixing G.U., making it 1080p@60, and putting in a new form for Haseo

I hope this game can up the class variety

Not including Haseo, who counts as a Twin Blade, Edge Punisher and Flick Reaper, the game gives you:

Twin Blades: 3
Harvest Cleric: 2
Shadow Warlocks: 3 (2)
Dance Macabres: 1
Steam Gunners: 2
Tribal Grapplers: 2
Flick Reapers: 1
Lord Partizans: 1
Edge Punishers: 0 (the only one you get is a temp character in the prologue. Matsu is also an adept Rogue with an edge punisher but only uses Steam Gunner)
Blade Brandiers: 7 wtf

They could balance this by having other characters join you that didn't originally.

Edge Punishers: Gabi Grein and Sakaki (lol)
Flick Reapers: Hetero
Harvest clerics: Sophora (actually an adept rogue)
Lord Partizans: Nala
Dance Macabres: Hiiragi
Shadow Warlocks: Aina
Steam Gunners: Ovan, Taihaku
Tribal Grapplers: Sirius
Twin Blades; Negimaru

>>380570612

Supposedly because he has 1337 PvP skeelz, as The World is actually meant to be a coordination and timing based game as opposed to what we actually play.
But also likely to be just, cheating, I guess.
>>
>>380570852
It fucking does suck, it being on PC is better than backwards compatibility, now I know I'll forever have it available on PC and playable, instead of having to get a new console every few years and rebuy the damn game. Look how pointless the SotC HD release was on PS3. I can't even play it anymore. Might as well have not bought it at all.
>>
>>380543354
GU, nothing honestly. Post game dungeon in the 4th game of the original set was brutal though.
>>
>>380570612
Settingwise, they've got the slowest growth compared to the rest, so a level 20 edge punisher would have more skills unlocked compared to a level 20 adept rogue who chose edge punisher as they're first class. But even that's weak, since there should have been the autists who would have made optimized builds based around Adept Rogues since they can wear the best armor class but use the fastest weapons or best magic.

Honestly I was always saddened by the fact that Matsu was never able to switch weapons on the fly like Haseo. Hell, imagine if some of the tournament fights or chaotic PKs could swap weapons on the fly like haseo could.
>>
>>380570612
he was a 'that guy' tier min-maxer. an adept rogue has four points to spend on what class's weapons and skills they can use
Blade Brandier - 1 Point
Edge Punisher - 1 Point
Twin Blade - 1 Point
Flick Reaper - 2 Points
Lord Partizan - 2 Points
Tribal Grappler - 2 Points
Macabre Dancer - 3 Points
Harvest Cleric - 3 Points
Shadow Warlock - 3 Points
Steam Gunner - 3 Points

virtually everyone went for either a 2+2 combination or a 3+1 combination. Haseo instead went or a 1+1+2 combination that focused on being able to have an advantage on nearly anyone in PvP

I seriously never got how each class got their respective amount of points
>>
>>380570612
I remember a lot of the in-game forums talking about how Adept Rogues were trash compared to the other classes since they didn't specialize in anything. In other words, for any role you want an Adept Rogue to fill, the specialized version could fill it better, which is generally how a lot of MMOs tend to play out; player classes get pigeonholed into hyper-specialized roles to maximize efficiency that doesn't lend itself to jack-of-all-trades playstyles.

Haseo was somehow just really good at using his class's versatility to exploit his enemies' weaknesses, I think. He was famous as a PKK specifically, not anything else. He was just really good at taking down other players who used brute force to trample over weaker players.
>>
>>380570164
I think he got a lot of focus, as far as party members go. He's definitely one of the coolest characters in the series IMO and his ties to the original series makes his presence feel more significant though, so they probably could have done more with him.
>>
>>380566551
>whether you're willing to slog through IMOQ or not
There's also a series of novels (that got official english releases) that tell the story of IMOQ from Blackrose's POV that kind of work as a summary of the original games, though you'd probably want to read them alongside a summary of the games' stories to get the full picture.
>>
>>380571925
The reason given is that while the original games sold better, G.U had a higher focus on characters and got the player more invested in them and some stuff. I'm paraphrasing, but I don't remember which of the articles had the original quote so take that as you will.

Yes, that's the reason he's connected to Skeith, and why he's so fucking good at the game. He wasn't able to remember the events before his coma until later, but because he was the first victim of the Phases, his avatar became Skeith. It also reflects the gradual growth from emotionally unstable to pretty cool guy.

Yeah, he has a bit of a wonky history.

Sora was in 4th grade during Sign, was one of the best players in The World R:1. He gets coma'd by Skeith at the end of Sign. Then he gets "merged" with Skeith during a novel that takes place after Sign but before Infection. This is referred too as Shadow Sora, but its actually Skeith just "using" Sora like a computer to communicate and navigate The World in order to find Aura. Once he's found Aura, he transforms into Skeith and attacks her. That's what happens right at the start of Infection.

When Kite DD's Skeith, Sora is still trapped in Skeith's wand, and is later freed by Kite in a sidequest.

The Sora that is a party member at the end of quarantine isn't the real Sora, it's Shadow Sora (Skeith). That's why he talks in corrupted text, the same way Shadow Sora did in the novel.

The real Sora suffers from repressed memories and amnesia, but his motor skills from his time as an expert-level player killer in R:1 remain. When he returns to The World in its 2nd incarnation, Skeith (who exists in the Black Box, the Sora player data was destroyed along with all the other player characters from R:1) is naturally attracted towards him, and attaches itself to him, which is why Haseo has Skeith as his Epitaph. Its also the reason why Skeith is able to talk to Haseo directly later in the story, but once again does so using Haseo's appearance and personality, the same way Shadow Sora did.

Wait a minute, why GU?

GU is a continuation of the original .hack story, which entailed Kite and his descent into the madness that is The World, right?

Now I never played GU, but based on the fact that Kite is literally on the cover of OP's picture, I'm guessing that players who have no idea who he is will be somewhat at loss?

Isn't remaking GU and not the original a fundamentally bad idea?

Couldn't control it. One guys wife was already fucking making a hacked hub world for her own self amusement, there were rouge AI they couldn't do shit about, and they never really 'owned' the game per-say. So the fact that suddenly a PLAYER was now having all of this BS control over things that was overshadowing their own control over the game, they flipped the fuck out.

>>380576972
The first 4 have aged poorly. Battles are slow as you have to keep flipping menus to use weapon and item skills, all while shit's still going on around you. It's also just clunky as hell as once you start an attack animation, you're kinda just -stuck- in it till it finishes. The lack of jumping also leave the entire thing very flat. The entire game is fucking single textured flat ground for 90% of the experience. G.U.'s a lot better in every other design though.
>>
>>380577303

Read the thread, anon. This has literally been answered 20 other times.

>>380577303
GU stands on its own, just like the rest of .hack, it has its own story that stands on its own. You can see the larger story if you see what comes before, but you don't need to do that to understand what's in front of you. Furthermore, GU has its own self-contained plot that doesn't include the same cast in the same roles as the previous games.

Plus, there's something about seeing the origin of something AFTER you are already invested that people like. Chances are if this remake is successful, when they eventually remake IMOQ, newer fans will actually be a lot more excited to see the origins of Kite and co. before the game that introduced them to the series.

I don't see a reason why CC2 can't remix the originals to include some foreshadowing or ideas from GU in them as well, since remaking IMOQ is basically going to require them to make entirely new games.
>>
>>380576968

>>380577416

Yeah I did (after I posted, obviously). The creator gives meme-reasons like "oh because it's easier to connect with this character xD" while other anons make more sense saying that it's a weird little test to see how cold the water is.

And while both of those reasons are (somewhat) valid, I still don't understand why the original .hack 1 game would have been a better pick.

Kite was much more naturally introduced to The World, as his player was literally a noob and it made sense that he got turtorialized to death.

Isn't this new kid suppose to be some long-time-veteran? I don't know. It might work.

>>380577532

But isn't Kite a rather large part of the ongoing story in GU? I mean the guy's on the fucking cover.

And if you have 0 idea who this is, or why you should care, why would a new player be interested in the game at all?

Maybe you're right though, and maybe the mystery will intrigue enough to keep going, but knowing today's audience I'm not so sure.
>>
>>380577169
Part 2 & 3 can be slogs. Part 2 alone is like a filler segment as that's when a ton of the secondary cast comes into play and gets unlocked in some fashion. Part 3 only starts to ramp up as more things about Mia come to light and Elk starts to go psycho. Part 4 though is just a wild ride from start to finish, and feels good every step of the way. You just gotta drag on the 60+ required dougions between 1&4 though.

'Cuz AIDA, Avatars and already unstable IRL people.

You can trace all of that back to Morgana being a very antisocial and cuntish program on her own value, I guess, and anything stemming from her just making you quite melodramatic.

I didn't even know these games existed, but I saw this copy pasta once that gave me feels like you wouldn't believe, and it involved them. Later I emulated the first four, and I was blown away by how far into them I got. I literally couldn't stop playing them for like a month, then I started the newer trilogy and it happened all over again, albeit for even longer the 2nd round. Before I knew it I watched the Sign anime, the Liminality one, and Roots (roots wasn't that great, it was just okay) and I suddenly realized I was hardcore. I read a PDF of AI Buster online, and eventually got a copy of Vol 1 and 2 of that. I planned to continue, but damn this series really is kino. It was so ahead of its time, and regardless of how clunky the original games were, the addictive formula was there, they had incredible depth and worldbuilding, I relished every moment. I'll post the pasta after this.

>But isn't Kite a rather large part of the ongoing story in GU? I mean the guy's on the fucking cover.
all you need to know about Kite n G.U. is he's one of a trio of famous players form the original iteration of the MMO, and that there's an evil-looking guy who looks like him but doesn't act like him or even talk that's going around hacking people

no

>>380577763
>You can trace all of that back to Morgana being a very antisocial and cuntish program on her own value
Morganna is a mom who realized childbirth was going to kill her so she tried to abort her child to no avail. Then she had her kid and died.
>>
>>380577705
>But isn't Kite a rather large part of the ongoing story in GU?
Oh...if only you knew...Because you clearly don't know, and that's part of the entire lure. it draws the older players in with this sudden reveal, and it also draws new people in with the entire starting part of the game playing out as well. Both sets get invested for different reasons, and that's kinda G.U.'s strength I'd say. Even if your investment into the past reveals isn't that strong, it still hooks you in a different way.

But no, really, your entire understanding on that cover is wrong and you need to play these games before you read this thread in full and ruin yourself.
>>
>>380577705
That isn't Kite, its basically a copy of his character data that Aura uses to do her bidding. There's an Orca and Balmung copy as well. They are considered their own separate characters. Fun thing though, if you had a data flag for Quarantine on your ps2 memory card, the Kite copy in the new trilogy would have the same name as whatever you named Kite in the first games.
>>
>>380577705
>Isn't this new kid suppose to be some long-time-veteran?
He is technically, but he has no memories of it. The moment he enters The World, he gets PK'd in 2 seconds flat. Having a character-focused game to start out with makes it more likely that the game won't fail outright. Not only that, but the whole gameplay style of IMOQ can really weary really fast.

>But isn't Kite a rather large part of the ongoing story in GU
What you're referring to is Azure Kite. There are reasons for it, but since you haven't played G.U, I won't spoil. The actual Kite has little to no direct relevance on the plot, and never actually appears.

She's Actually not really Subaru, but a vagrant AI that contains copies of Subaru's memories and thinks she's Subaru, until she has a moment of clarity during emails with Kite and realizes she isn't a real person

As she tries to focus and understand her situation, Kite just tells her, "don't worry about those things, okay?" and being able to try to calm her down while she was trying not to lose her mind was very sad but also heartwarming to finally be able to interact with one of the VAI's, like Lycoris from the AI Buster novel, except AI Subaru wasn't in the situation where she "had to die" and instead could live by what Morgana said to Tsukasa, "do as you will" and so this Subaru lived in the beautiful World

Her thought process also reminded me of the Replicants from Blade Runner, in her realization that her memories are not her own, and that she has to come to terms with that fact that she is merely a simulacrum of someone else who is still very much alive and returns to The World later

It was even stranger because she was admittedly an AI...in a singleplayer game, which is filled with AI, so in a way she was actually breaking the 4th Wall in a sense when she confirmed what she was, and when Kite spoke to her, I felt as if I was speaking through the 4th Wall, so say the only thing I would have been able to say in that situation, which felt as if I was "crossing reality" so to speak

I used to imagine her just playing inside my PS2 all day and night, by herself, alone, standing around and staring at the small details of textures in dungeons, like a prisoner stares at the stones of his walls, and trying to enjoy her existence in such a beautiful land (the land of Twilight) before she was finally erased

Its probably just remnants of my youthful stupidity, but I still feel sad to this day, imagining her waiting, sleeping in total darkness, The World in total pitch black darkness, just waiting until my PS2 turns on

No.
>>
>>380578179
Its extremely similar to the story of Neuromancer and Wintermute. So similar infact, I almost think they based it off of Gibson's classic novel. Wintermute is an AI that can achieve, but it can't be creative, while Neuromancer is an AI that can't really achieve much because all of its "memory" is empty RAM, and so it can actually learn and has room to write new ideas into itself, to the point where it can actually copy people into a "realm" within itself, and not only copy them, but those people who are copied can actually continue to grow and live, even though after their real selves die

SIGN shows that many players, like all MMOs, look very much the same but with different faces/palettes as a wink to old time MMORPGs with cero customization (Hence why Mimiru = Black Rose, or Orca=Bear, and all this Kite clone shit, and Subaru's everywhere.)

Macha, being Tsukasa's friend, is later re-configurated into Mia; instinctively, she tries to find Tsukasa, but having no memories of her previous self, she finds... Elk. Who looks and behaves 95% the same as she did.

All of this is why I'm hoping they will do the first 4 if G.U. sells well. G.U.'s combat needs a little more polish to make it modern, and having the better target switching and weapon swapping from 3 in 1&2 would help a lot as well, but it doesn't need the full reword the first 4 do. We put up with it back then as MMO's in it's era where far different beast. Ultama and Everquest both where clunky PoS, and this was kinda taking aspects of such games into itself. But that was over 15 years ago.

As much as I loved this series when I played it years ago, I don't have the desire to replay it. I will be getting those FMVs though, they were great.

The dub of //IMOQ was good but the entirety of G.U just screamed edge. The dub made it way worse.

On a side note I kinda see why those anti-eop faggots keep doing what they do. After witnessing the massacre that was the Witcher. Translation fucked it up.

They better add a parody mode for GU as well

Bullshit, there's questlines involving him, Wiseman and Orca.
And EVERYONE interacted with one another by Quarantine as they were literally going to fight against a potential deathly threat, and you see them all gathered in Helba's sector discussing tactics.

FYI this server is run by the hackers who took down the original server. They will grief you in game with hacks.
>>
>>380588706
Nah, Elk was just generally uninteresting in IMOQ. His issues after having lost Mia in the way he did made sense in G.U, and the affection that came out of it at least made him a memorable character rather than an accessory for Mia.
>>
>>380589215
The authentic .hack experience for anyone who wasn't involved with Haseo or Kite.
>>
>>380588252
But he's not really friends with any of them. They simply strove towards a common goal, but Elk never really cared about anyone or anything besides Mia and Kite. Wiseman was simply a guy who told him to do things.

He might not have cared for them personally but you would think there would be at least mentions on the subject.
"Oh hey we saved the world together."
"Oh yeah remember when we all fucking died? Good times."
"Oh hey you are that unstable 14 year old hacker kid that I met"
>>
>>380589686
They're using different avatars. Elk has no reason to care about "Yata", and Yata is a dick.

Endrance never meets "Tri-Edge".
