Cataclysm DDA (http://en.cataclysmdda.com/). Its an open world post apocalyptic survival game with a lot of depth, combat, and secrets. Not quite dwarf fortress levels, but close. There's tons to do but it does have a bit of a learning curve. Its top down 2D but the graphical version has a tile set that doesn't look too bad and its free. Yep, there's two versions current out: stable and experimental. I'd start with the stable version as its easier to learn, though it has less features than the experimental. You can get the latest versions of either on the wiki.

No. A simple craftable sling is enough to hold your own against most enemies, and if you're freezing to death and not getting any clothes early on, the game spawns you a sleeping bag.

STALKER is best but has a lot of problems mods can't fix mainly the tiny maps and AI that has x-ray vision

Detroit Megacity pretty much is a home. There are shops and the ninjas patrolling around are friendly if you hail them in combat.
