Bingo. The entire point of the story was lost on me because I was already rich at that point.

Obsidian should have made it so at the end of dead money you could only bring 1 DLC item back (holorifle, assassin suit, etc)it would have made letting go much harder, forcing you to let go off all this cool new gear you obtained and allowing you only to bring back 1

The gold and the Old World is for Elijah. Christine had to let go of her hatred for Elijah to make it out, Dean had to let go of his hatred for the casinoman, and Dog/God had to let go of the fractured pieces of his identity to let it form a whole again. Basically it's about moving on from obsessive, manipulative desires, and Elijah was unable to.
