Best fighting game to play right now?
I want to get into this genre, but not really willing to pay a bunch of $$ for hot fresh version every 6 months

Get an older game on steam or console. Make sure it has online play. SF3ThirdStrike, Guilty Gear XX, Vampire Savior... or you could download Fitecade and play tons of older fightmans for free on your computer.

If you want a modern game you're going to be buying DLC no matter what to get the full experience. Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is a pretty complete package, though.

Games you're looking for would include Injustice 2 and Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator. Of course they'll still add more DLC to Injustice, but what you get now is pretty damn decent.

Don't play SF5.
