Headsets tend to break, really really easily in my experience. I used to buy $30-$50 microphones and even though I took care of them, the wires would always start to short or start having other problems.

A desk mic and headphones means that if one part starts to deteriorate, you won't have to buy the other one as well. I made the investment of spending $250 on a desk mic and good headphones, and they've lasted me for many years now. Never have to replace shit anymore.
