The aesthetic looks pretty. The physics on the background pieces is amusing. The music is bog-standard and the animation on Yoshi is really fucking bad - pretty sure it's made by Arzcest because of these two things.

This is the third Woolly Yoshi game in a row and we never got a sequel to Kirby's Epic Yarn, I would have much preferred that to both this and the new Kirby they announced to be honest

This game looks really cute, and honestly beautiful in terms of art design and all the little details and suvh, but holy shit does it seem fucking DULL to actually play.
I feel like Nintendo say the original Yoshi's Island and thought everyone like it because of the great crayon artstyle and not the gameplay being top-tier.

That's exactly what this is, Nintendo are the only company who can put out a generic 2D platformer for $60 and get away with it, rather than actually attempting anything ambitious. See: NSMB, Retro's DK games.

real talk: Are any of the Yoshi games past Yoshis island on the SNES worth a damn? Story was weak as fuck and the critical reception to the rest of the series seems to waver between mediocre to decent so I've never played them. Nintendo seems hellbent on shilling this series for whatever reason

Mechanically DS, New Island, and Woolly World are all fine. The main issue with the newer games is their level design is often lacking in challenge and tends to feel like a bad imitation of levels you already played in Island.

Woolly World has some of the best and most creative levels the series has seen since the original, but it's held back by some more forgettable levels in between. It's still the best of the 3 games and worth a playthrough.
