I want to dispute that... But I really can't. When I played years ago, I was in my 'fuck all religion' phase, but if I played again, I'd probably give Miriam a try... If not for her crippling lack of research.

Lal was a bro. I never got why practically no-one I've ever spoken to liked him. I even managed to trick my English teacher once into framing one of his quotes and putting it on the wall.

>"Freeflow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. For the free nation constricting its grip on public discourse has begun the rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart, he dreams himself your master."

No, this is just how you do actual diversity, you every character and actual character, and more than anything, you focus on the only diversity that matters, diversity of thought.

Since Planet actually was alive and some sort of Psychic entity, Deirdre was probably right after all.

I don't know if Alien Crossfire is canon, but since the presence of actual alien races is confirmed, humankind needed to accelerate its evolution and potential in all sectors at a pace that exceeded even morgan and zarkovs ambition.

Harnessing the psychic potential of planet was probably key to human survival, so wiping out and sterilizing it might be a bad idea.

>>
>>380494206

>>
>>380494375

Yeah but here's where the two games diverge, Beyond Earth was awful at launch and the base game was garbage, I haven't played the expansion for it so I do not know if it improved the game much or not. SMAC was pretty much great on release with good AI, diplomacy and a core game.
>>
Morgan was on the ship because he was a talented economist.
Zakharov was on the ship because he is a genius and brilliant scientist.
Deidre was on the ship to make sure that nobody forgets how pollution and lack of respect for nature ruined Earth.

Everyone had the job to be a good person but in Alpha Centauri they all get corrupted by their own ideals.

Deidres love for Planet makes her brainwash her own and other people with worms.
Morgan would sell a bottle of air for a dollar and Zak doesn't have any kind of morals.
>>
>>380494496
I actually quite like Beyond Earth, but you're right, it wasn't Alpha Centauri.

Beyond Earth was perfectly serviceable, but didn't do anything special and didn't really explore its core idea of transhumanism as well as it could. Alpha Centauri on the other hand, FORCED us to look at the dark side of these amazing, futuristic societies we were creating, governing and fighting over.

BE could have gone the route of, "Okay, we know why the future's good, we've seen why it could be bad; now let's look at the good that can be found alongside the bad," but instead it kind of didn't do anything...
>>

>>
>>380494884
Morgan was a stowaway, actually. He had himself smuggled on board, since he financed most of the operation. He wasn't part of the crew.
Zakharov's part wasn't just to be "le brilliant scienceman", but to maintain the ship. He was also the project lead in the building of it, so there's that too.
Deirdre was just a botanical officer under Zakharov, her position had nothing to do with any eco-preaching.

BE and the expansion has the best diplomacy of any Civ title. I was surprised they didn't incorporate it into Civ6 since it's so damn good.

>>380495009

Yeah, one the biggest warning signs for me was that the factions were based on nations instead of ideas and philosophies. It's not inherently a bad game but it wasn't a good successor to SMAC, spiritual or not.

They also entirely dropped any support for the game after the expansion which really pisses me off. With proper patches, DLC and content updates it would have been a really good space 4X game, but now it's forever stuck being mediocre.
>>
>>380496006

He was technically a stowaway. His company financed the unity mission and he had a secret area for himself built.

The best thing about SMAC is the setting and characters. The gameplay itself is kind of 'meh' to be honest and doesn't quite hold up. It's definately worth a playthrough however and get a feel for it yourself. You can get it on GoG for cheap as fuck.
>>
>>380496435

>BE and the expansion has the best diplomacy of any Civ title. I was surprised they didn't incorporate it into Civ6 since it's so damn good.

The expansion IS good, but again, it's not great. It's just okay. A 7/10 bringing you enjoyment for a couple dozen hours, but nothing that sticks with you.
>>
>>380481227
The entire point of the game was that every ideology had its benefits and its problems, and that all of them taken to their extremes were equally terrible in different ways.

The closest to right would therefore be Lal, but rigid obsession with democracy and inclusiveness comes at the cost of efficiency, flexibility and stability necessary for a society to survive crisis situations.
>>
>>380496829
>>380497138

Yeah, it doesn't magically make the game a perfect title, but it adds a bit of neat stuff. The updated diplomacy was one of the highlights. Would have been fun to see what the game could have been if it was supported.

>how did one 18-year-old game get more right about diversity
simple, it came at a time before your defences were up, before you became predisposed to raise your heckles at the very appearance of diversity.

Back then when you saw a group like that you took no notice and you played the game. Now at the very sight of a woman or a black person, we'll get about 300 threads a day talking about how shoehorned it is before the game actually drops and we get to see what it's about.

If that game were released today, not a single thing changed about it, and we could see the leaders in the trailer, it would get ripped apart. Same thing is true of any of the classics.

It got that shit right because we hadn't yet been trained to think it was wrong. Thanks contemporary identity politics! Thanks /v/!

I honestly have no strong feelings about if a character is black or female or whatever. I care about how they're characterised and AC's characters are all so much more than their ethnicity.

I actively hate /v/'s knee-jerk response just as much as I hate the left's cunty identity politics; I'd rather actually form an informed opinion. You're half-right though. I think AC did it so well because it was before the modern wave of bullshit. They felt no compulsion to fall in line with the crap one side or the other was pushing, because there wasn't nearly as much of it back before 2010.

>>380506963
BE didn't even try to address that shit one way or the other, what are you talking about? Rather than AC's approach of making the characters more than their race/gender, BE simply made it so they were LESS than their race/gender and infinitely interchangeable with a cardboard cutout. Any characterisation they had was just window-dressing, while in AC it was integral to who they were.
>>
>>380508985
>Any characterisation they had was just window-dressing, while in AC it was integral to who they were.
This is only true if you consider the supplemental material. In the actual games, the characters were little more than paragons for their respective ideology and could've easily had interchangeable race and gender.
>>
>>380481227
That russian dude.
>>
>>380510082
What about the secret project quotes? In AC you always were told a little about who they were or what they believed in.

In BE, it's mostly purely utilitarian - make the colony do better. There's little discussion about their ideologies or beliefs; they might as well be reading from an instruction manual.

Yang and Santiago are the only ones demonstrably wrong.

Zakharov was right, because without his mindset the mission would never have been conceived.
Morgan was right, because without his money, and the mechanisms that allowed him to gather it, the mission would never have gone ahead
Deidre was right, because unchecked expansion fucked Earth up
Miriam was right, because progress without thought will cause history to repeat
Lal was right, because without his philosophy mankind will just be lead by the nose by one of the above

Yang expects everyone to live as he does, without realising that not everyone has his capacities.
Santiago is irrelevant in a society that can defend itself already.
