What went so fucking wrong with XB2? I'll probably still get it but it feels like a BIG step down. It seems WAY too anime (we're getting a hot tub scene folks), the designs are godawful, and it's doing the shitty cheap game thing where they use multiple unknown artist's art and mesh them together in the UI. Speaking fo the UI, it seems too cutesy and bad compared to what we had before. The new combo mechanic that finishes in a cool attack seems good though, and i'll still love exploring the world. Just wish the designs were better.

I think what people are trying to express with "this looks too anime" is that it looks like the sword art online end of the anime scale.
I agree with the criticism to be honest.
Xenoblade's character design is confident enough to have its own personality, and the characters base outfits all look pretty practical.
X had the potato faces but I think that the main characters outfits were also pretty well designed and certainly suited the game's environment.
Everything I've seen from Xeno2 looks like pretty generic LN art or something, which some people are going to love. SA is real popular after all.

I loved the other two games though so I'm willing to give it a shot, but I can see why the artstyle is so polarizing.

Yes the art style plays a hand, but I already said it comes down to the moe blob girl, kiddy looking characters, the hot tub scene, the whole humans / other beings being weapons for you (technically it was the same in the original xenoblade, but now they feel like that valkyrie drive game), and just the overtly anime art being plastered everywhere in the UI instead of using the models (the UI menu itself looks kinda bad in all honesty though, but it's not really "anime" menu wise). Yes, i'm biased against the art style but i'll probably still play it because I like JRPGs and Xenoblade's combat. Not really anything like it so far in the switch's life span and most of my game's up until then will be multiplayer since that's what Nintendo is pushing out.
