So with the new update out I decided to run a test. I wanted to see how long it would take for a new player to get through the start of the game and leave the first solar system.
Going through the intro mission, gathering the core fragments, opening the stargate, sitting through an unskippable cutscene, and completing the facility mission, and gathering the spaceship fuel, it took just about an hour and 45 minutes to leave the solar system. For further effect, I even found a blink hammer on the first planet and used it to move around as quickly as possible.
If you bought the game on steam, a new player would have under 15 minutes to realize the game is shit and refund it.
I'm having fun playing it with a friend

It's a shit game but the OST is top tier.
I haven't played it since launch but I have the soundtrack in my regular rotation of sleep music because it's so comfy.

The OST is fucking annoying. You have one of three songs playing at any time while planetside, and one and a half songs while in combat. It's far better to either mod in your own music or mute it and play something else.
I'm playing a bunch of mods and friends. We're having a ton of fun right now.

Pretty sure there is an option to skip the intro mission when you create a character. That said, the game is fucking bland. Feels like focused on making cosmetic shit instead of actual gameplay.

It's a compilation of good ideas and blatant rip-offs (literally pokemon), each of which showcases the complete ineptitude of its developers.
Seriously, things like "pilotable mechs", "hunger system" or "tiered loot" that have been done a thousand times before for easy good results are carefully engineered in Starbound to be the least fun possible. The game is a textbook example of a game without a real direction other than "Terraria with heaps of cool shit, gameplay or balance be damned!".
That said, because of all the content it can be fun for a few hours, if pirated and played with friends.
I used to be all over this game when it came out. I never came far, but that was part of the fun, I knew there was still so much to discover.
I returned a few months after quitting. It's different, and kind of lost it's charm. No more hunger, you don't summon bosses anymore, the story is shit. Might try it with friends again tho.

I know it doesn't excuse the developers but it's good with mods
There are mods to skip cut scenes, return classic food mechanics, and to make your inventory and storage space fuck huge because I don't want to bother with inventory management in a game like this.
Yes alot of the mods I have basically negate decisions chucklefish Makes for game design.
I like this game but its developers are worthless.
Unless you count the modding community of developers, then the guy that makes fracking universe is the best and most active developer on this game.
