You have to understand that back in the day, people did not have the scientific and social understanding of sex that we do. There was no birth control and casual sex was rampant. Once a woman was sexually mature, she spent basically the rest of her life pregnant with most of her children dying very young.

For a man, to have the instinct to prefer virgins and non-promiscuous woman was a huge evolutionary advantage as it increased the chance that the children you were caring for were actually your own.
