Nah they ain't dated at all, I started with X, then XII, went to VII, then finished IX. I'm doing I now, it's still great fun doesn't feel outdated at all, but I haven't bought a new game system since the WIi I don't have a PC either so I don't know what's new. Final fantasy IX felt new and advanced to me DESU especially the CGI cutscenes they blew my mind away

The series varies in quality because it experiments a lot, but I wouldn't consider the old ones dated at all, and even then they have remakes and ports that iron out a bunch of the issues they had.

They are still worth playing, but FFVII is said to be the best in the series, but it's not a great place to start anymore. FFVII has been dated pretty badly, the graphics haven't aged well and controlling your character in the environments can be pretty difficult to get used to, especially with no analogue control. I never finished it, because I got stuck at some point on the first disc, and wasn't really motivated enough to figure out what I needed to do in order to continue. That's not to say I didn't enjoy what I played, once I got passed the stiff controls and dated graphics. It was the transitional game from 2D to 3D, I don't think either VI or VIII had these problems
