I enjoyed it so far. I'm up to the last chapter/4.

The level design is creative and rewards exploration, with lots of secrets to find.
The aesthetic is ugly, but immersive.
The sound design is 10/10, some of the best in vidya.
The gameplay and shooting is top tier, rewarding skilled fast-paced play.

pretty much my only issues with the game are the graphics (although it's actually kind of charming in its own way,) and the fact that the Super Nailgun basically makes the Nailgun useless, despite the regular Nailgun looking better.

Would definitely recommend at the asking price on Steam, make sure you launch QuakeGL.

No but it's pretty good. I'm more of a modernist when it comes to fps though. As much as I like Quake and Doom sometimes, they have more than their fate share of flaws. Quake feels a lot more modern than Doom though. It's just a Shane both franchises only got 2 good entries. Though in fairness I never played Quake 4 and barely touched Doom 3.

Fighting the monsters in Quake doesn't feel the same as in Doom. It's not just a more modern, less colorful Doom.

I find Quake's visual design ugly but I actually don't agree. While there is a lot of muddy brown, and it's not as visually vibrant as Doom, that's what they were going for. It literally is meant to be ugly.

The "mud filter" is no different to the Matrix's "green filter" in that regard. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, CoD and Gears just overdid it and made us tired of it.

But for a game about disgusting Lovecraftian horrors in the bowels of the Earth and in other dimensions, it works just fine.

I played it last year for the first time and it's probably my favorite FPS of all time now. The shooting feels good and the movement is perfect, and has great sound design. The level design is really good too but I think it fell apart a bit in chapter 4. Personally I absolutely love the look of the game but that's all up to preference.

But the multiplayer was where it's at.

It's say core gameplay resembles more Doom 4 than Doom 1/2.
Main difference you'll see in Quake is that monsters are less numerous but harder to kill. Ability to evade attacks, and/or quickly disengage if things start looking ugly will come far more handy than twitchshooting right in the middle. Maps have more vertical design. Little tip: zombies can be killed only with explosives or quad damage. Other weapons can only knock them down.
Quake 2 has you fighting mostly enemies armed with projectile weapons, quite often hitcan, which changes pacing to more tactical, less circle strafing, more hit-and-run. Stunning enemies to break their attacks becomes essential whan dealing with whatever can't be killed with 2 blasts from super-shotty. You can also rush with super-shotty and bait certain enemies into melee attacks, which will delay them firing. Oh, and you can store powerps in inventory and use them when you feel you need them.
Quake 4 is simply better Doom 3. Overall gameplay design is similar, but everything is plain better. Bigger areas, more effective weapons, faster combat. Also one of very few games where AI buddies are useful as more than distraction for bad guys.

Pretty much all 4-5 star maps and episodes on Quaddicted are absolutely worth it. Recently, Arcane Dimensions is the go-to mod. Introduces a lot of new monsters and has killer maps.

If you recall there were lots of doom like games during that era...

What made doom so well was the clean development of the game. It not only ran smooth but the textures were pristine, the sounds were crispy, clear and synced well with the animations. The guns were diverse and were well developed.

The maps were laid out in such a way that they had traps, surprises, upper and lower levels within the maps, masses of enemies pummeling you.

As I recall, the only games that stood up to doom well were Duke Nukem and the original Blood.

source ports. GZDoom for Doom 1/2, you can also use it to play Heretic and other games using Doom engine. ZDoom is very similar, but does not recieve updates anymore.
As for Quake, search for Ultimate Quake Patch, it also brings back soundtrack. It's normally not included, because it's not part of game files: original retail Quake ran it directly from game CD.
