Is this going to be the best 3D mario or is that title still going to be held by 64?

SM64 changed the industry and all but it's pretty short. It's like 14 hours long or something. They said SMO has tons of shit to collect and do so I think SMO will not only be greater but bigger as well. SMO has much higher production costs and Nintendo simply spends more money on their big projects now. But that's what I'm thinking about right now. How big is SMO?
>>
>>380426974
It has at least 5 worlds
>new donk

>Map only lists 5 kingdoms (Dong City, Fossil Valley from the trailer, Mexicoland, Steam Gardens and what I assume is the vegetable world)

I'm slightly worried about length
>>
>>380427434
How the fuck do you even get that from the trailer, it showed literally nothing about the spooky hat world except for like 2 seconds
>>
>>380426468
64 hasn't held that title since Galaxy came out.

If it's "Worst 3D Mario" we're going for, making Sonic 06 with Mario is definitely the way to go.

Sunshine is currently the only released 3D Mario game with proper camera controls. That makes it the best 3D Mario game by default.

"Best 3D Mario game" is a very low bar, however.
>>
>>380426468
64 seems better, no 2D sections at all.
>>

3D World already holds that title. Odyssey looks great, though.

Holy shit this.

It's hard to compete with 64 Mario's freedom of movement, but I'm confident the levels in Odyssey will be better and that it will have better boss fights.
>>
>>380426695
At first I thought it was going to be some shitty party game as that is all rabbids ever are, but after seeing it is basically xcom-lite, I want it. I hope it has some challenging levels later on because the premise really interests me

>>
Why does the hat have eyes again?
>>
>>380426624
New donk is 1-1, mexico 2-1 and forest likely 3-1

Challenge should grow organically. if there is ONE thing they are good at is to have a steady progression and some solid challenge in the later part
>>
It looks quite boring if I can be honest with you guys.
>>
>>380429950
Don't know if you saw the treehouse footage but I saw a difficulty option and they talked about different objectives. That bizarre game might actually turn out to be good
>>
>>380430097
But SM3DLand is not sluggish wtf are they talking about
>>
>>380430546
Compared to 64 and Sunshine
>>
>>380428339
Unlikely, from the trailer you see a LONG part of the forest, basically you descend father and farther into it, and you always see the red tubing from the steam part. Pretty sure the fossil land is separate, since it's open sky.

Also the veggies world is ''Luncheon kingdom''. You can see the name in one of the art
>>
>>380429950
Same for me, having a title like this on the switch will be pretty damn awesome.

>>
>>380431042
Felt like a step back. Locked camera angles were the worst. Wasn't 3D World an attempt to combine aspects from the newer 2D mario games? I never cared for 2D mario so much. Mario 64 was the first I got into as a kid. Skipped sunshine cause lol gamecube and the Galaxies brought me back to Mario when I grabbed them on the Wii. I guess I'm stuck in Galaxies cause they seemed perfect. Maybe Odyssey will be good. I'd love for it to be good. Otherwise year 1 of my Switch may make it a Splatoon machine, which isn't so bad. But I really wanted the feel the Galaxy games gave me.

Graphically maybe, but not from a gameplay perspective.
It starts with the space ship hub being boring, goes on with all missions practically being 2D levels in a 3D environment (you have no choice over which star to go for except the green ones), and on and on and on...

The Galaxy games felt like Miyamoto had forgotten what platforming in 3D means, especially what the advantages over 2D are.

I'm amazed at just how much stuff you can do in Odyssey. The variety looks amazing. Only problem with that is that with so much shit it's harder to make it a really tight cohesive game. Knowing Tokyo EAD they'll do a fine job,but we'll see if it managed to surpass the previous games.

Sunshine had awful mission objectives. A significant number of them were filler like chasing Shadow Mario or doing repetitive fetch quests. My problem with 64 is my problem with other 3D platformers such as Banjo Kazooie. You spend too much time in one level. Rather than going for challenged and progression, every level is a collectathon. I think Mario Galaxy 2 is probably the best 3D Mario game because rather than going for those bland open environments, it gives you actual levels to play and a lot of them. This looks to be mixing the two together, so I'm skeptical but it also appears to be trying a lot of new things.
Jazz is always nice. Mario works best with Jazz instead of orchestra, 3D Land has my favorite soundtrack and that was a lot of jazz

The only thing Sunshine has going for it is having good graphics for the time.

The worst thing it had going for it were those awful cutscenes and the stupid filler, what the hell were they thinking?

Whenever the subject of Mario came up, I kept saying that he was so popular that you could put him in anything and people would like it because he's Mario and the games developed for him are usually extremely polished. So it's nice to see Nintendo finally realized that and gave us some environments to explore that are worthy of his scale. More importantly, I realize the controls don't look like SM64's, but I won't be frustrated with that just yet because Odyssey's level design philosophy is clearly different. It's vertically-oriented, but also more context-sensitive (using the cap on enemies/objects to move, explore, and complete objectives). And that's obviously the game's main new mechanic so they're putting all of their confidence into that and making it as prevalent, but seamless, as possible. I'd say that they at least have that down, because all the possessions I've seen so far have seemed to flow with the gameplay perfectly, compared to some of Galaxy's power-ups that didn't feel as satisfying because they were temporary or controlled in a way that was appropriate for the level designs, but still not fun, like the Boo and Bee powerups.

Collecting the moons seems like it falls in line with the philosophy they had in mind for Breath of the Wild - breaking things up into smaller gameplay segments. They already said there would be considerably more moons to collect compared to the typical 120 stars or whatever Mario collected in past games, which is just like Breath of the Wild having all those little shrines. Friendly towards people taking the game around with them. I think some people might be worried that the actual Kingdoms themselves are small because there's the ship you start off from, but I'm hoping they're even bigger than we expected because of the checkpoint flags. Maybe we'll have an option to fast-travel by using the pause menu to warp to any one of those checkpoints, and you pick the one closest to the ship to get back. Fingers crossed.

Do we know what world has the underwater stuff with Beach Mario and Cheep Cheep Mario?
>>
>>380426468
Every level looks the same inside, it's too big with not a lot of variety. There does not seem much to do.
64 levels were very contained. the closest you could consider an actual world is Bob-Omb Battlefield, and there's enough to do with that little space. The stars themselves are easy and so are the ones in the beginners levels of Odyssey, so I won't hold that against the game.

but, Odyssey does not have a lot going as of now - its levels are bigger, but with less variety. You may not get lost, but it is a hassle to go through them. It was lame to even watch the gameplay videos.
However, there are also passages that remind me more of Super Mario 3D World or Mario Galaxy, they seem fine. But it's either "strictly linear" or "too open with nothing to do" here. We'll see how later levels are. But if the jungle level is any indication, it's shit. Everything was green. It's not exploring if I explore basically the same area every time.

>>380426695
This looks much better. It also has actual backgrounds that makes it feel much bigger.
Granted, it would be more confusing in platformers, but it could have been done.

You're confusing the levels with the overworld's. The gameplay we have seen of Odyssey shows that all the actual levels are smaller and more varied. It reminds me of say 3D Land/World with an open hub environment.

They always have, dummy. Also, I don't know if this classifies as one. Usually they have a large variety of items. So far we've seen moons and purple coins. Compare that to the first Banjo which had Jiggies, notes, Jinjos, Mumbo skulls, then every level had one or two unique things to find.
>>
>>380443442
Every basement for example was very contained, they were not oversized whatsoever. care to give an example?

I don't think Odyssey's levels are much smaller, the city level already is much bigger and even features another ceiling by the use of a trampoline. In the city, there are not a lot of enemies if any, and you can't do much, just walk around until you get later into the level.

>collecting crap
You mean the red coins? There is not much else you collect except for the stars, and they are a reward for a challenge you have made. The challenge itself could be pretty stupid and easy, just like in Odyssey (if not even moreso).

>>380443489

Not the guy you replied to, but I disagree on SM64's levels being oversized. They're extremely quick to get through once you're familiar with where everything is. You can get to anywhere in Bob-omb Battlefield within 60 seconds, just about. In Thwomp Fortress, you can scale all the way to the top in like thirty seconds. Oversized that is NOT. The only level you could say is possibly oversized is Rainbow Ride and even then you can fucking long jump to almost any point, it's a big obstacle course with no other pretense.

I think we can both agree that Mario's movements and mechanics with the enemies is gonna be rock solid, so the big test for this game is seeing if this new sort of level design works. If it doesn't work, I don't think they'll go to SM64's designs after this because to make it have the length of a game we expect it to be, they'd have to make not fifteen but like... SIXTY levels. Even with a lot of time I imagine they'd still get clobbered trying to do that.

>>
>>380444418

That's true, it's the game's weakest link because while it's vertical, you don't have any options to scale it other than following the spiral.

I'm gonna take an educated guess and say that going off the outside space alone scanned in the Desert Kingdom and the Woodland Kingdoms that the levels appear to be three, maybe four or five times the size of a Mario 64 level. That doesn't include Mario going inside of areas that may contain platforming challenges and other sub-levels where he can get moons. So whether that's big enough, we'll have to see.

Also, the other thing is that New Donk City was shown at night with different enemies and weather. And the Desert Kingdom was also shown at night with Mario riding around on that sphinx lion thing. So that should hopefully expand the levels a bit, too. Again, fingers crossed.
