Xbox is Microsoft and at any point they can Merge Console and PC.
the Xbox One X is essentially a low end Steam machine for microsoft Exclusives, which are also playable on PC.

Sony and Nintendo dont have the Luxury of being the company producing the OS for just about every computer in the world.

Sony got super lucky this generation that they have such a large install base without really doing anything. more of a Marketing Victory. other than their gaming division, the rest of sony is a failure. So it makes sense sony wants to keep its walls up as long as possible. Sony's mission now is to throw money at Studios to make games Exclusive, and prevent cross play, to stave of the Inevitable future where all games are Multiplat because they are so fucking expensive to make. And if every game is on every system, why would you buy a game console that isolates you and provides you with an inferior experience.

If Bloodborne was on PC at 60fps, why would anyone want to play it at 23fps on a console. it would weaken the desire to own anything sony.

FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS was a huge meme about PS3 for awhile, which was partially responsible for the other big meme, "PS3 has no games." Sony spent a generation playing catch up, though the difference certainly wasn't as vast as it is now. The POWER OF THE CELL shit didn't help either. Multiplats were consistently worse on the PS3, which helped drive those not loyal to any particular console brand to the 360.

Again, PR victory. All the 360 had to do was show up and not make the same dumb fucking mistake as the PS3 and it was an easy head start. I don't think Microsoft can pull off the catch up Sony did last gen, but who knows what direction we're going in now. Nintendo's even more out of the game than usual, and Microsoft and Sony seem to be in no hurry to make a real new console nor has the pro shown that it's going to make a large enough market to really justify dev time on PS4 Pro exclusive content.

There's also the factor that Microsoft consistently doesn't seem to like the dumpster fire aspect of the Xbox division. It can't just keep burning money with no tangible returns just to try and drive Sony further into a corner. Especially sense they're not even really pulling that off.
