Personally I don't even hate Arkham's combat but there are some good points raised regarding SM's use of it. First is the sheer amount of slowmo during moves which serves no purpose and can make fights really fucking tedious, then there's the fact that SM games have been using an Arkham style system for a while now, giving the IP to new developers was supposed to make things different but so far it's pretty much the same as ASM2 so it raises the question: what was the fucking point?

Eh, Spiderman comes inbuilt with limited precog justifying counters and a natural tendency towards showmanship. Which BamHam style is made for.

Making the system more varied by using the directional input with varied attacks would go a long way to make it fit such a game better. And that's a minor addition, in the grand scheme of things. There is a segment Thursday featuring this game, so maybe more will be revealed.

The counter button combined with the way the system is designed. All fights amount to becoming a ballerina who punches a bit and then gracefully hops around someone going for a punch to go for more punches. Batman tries to alleviate this with taser enemies and I think one more type (Brutes?) but as long as you throw a Batarang at them during your dance you are free to jump over or attack them until they either recover or you beat them. There's also the fact that your basic combo strings are relatively short and not really varied due to how quickly enemies attack you, so at most you can get maybe two or three punches before you either need to leap over someone or counter them.

It's a game type that focuses more on being flashy with no real depth in the actual combat due to how it's designed. Even in combat challenges for Batman you'll realize you're basically hopping around people and throwing Batarangs or using one of the other gadgets you had no use for in the main story barring to find new upgrades to prolong the combo while slapping everyone and then using ground takedowns while the coast is clear. Seriously, watch any of those challenges or even try them yourself trying to get the most points, you are in the air jumping over people more than you are attacking people.

You sure batons weren't a normal enemy in Asylum? I distinctly remember them being a pain in the ass, though maybe I'm thinking of the challenge mode.

Shields didn't really alleviate the problem in City since all they require you to do is just jump over them (Which you will be doing anyway if you want to keep up any sort of a combo).

Haven't played Origins or Knight though, so maybe they fixed it up there, but to me it felt like the difficulty in fighting came from trying to keep up a combo rather than actually trying to fight at all.

Shield guys cannot be countered, which does not alleviate the problem but does mean you have to deal with them a little differently.

The only game that tried to make it worth your while is Knight because you gain more XP if you don't get hit, rack up a decent combo and vary your attacks using gadgets, different combos and takedowns. Plus a gradind system.

Everything needed to make a great Spider-Man game has already been done. A simple flick through his catalogue would show you that we don't need big set pieces to have a fun Spider-Man game. Hell we don't even need much outside of a good swinging system as evidence by Spider-Man 2.

Focus very hard on having amazing mechanics and dynamic gameplay. The game should mainly focus on being technical, not simply cinematic; I do not want big button prompts, QTE's or game design that is very hand hold'y. Bosses should also be a big focus, I want them to utilize the open world for boss fights so that I can fight some iconic Spidey villains.

How about the people whose fucking job it is figure that shit out. It's been two gens, but the best people can do is "we'll just make it a cutscene that branches into you failing if you don't hit the button right." What the fuck happened to innovation? How about, off the top of my fucking head, making a more intelligent camera system that responds to what is being displayed on the screen, what the player needs to see, and how the player is moving? How about a more robust webbing system that allows for more than "press button to make one specific thing happen here." Something involving free aiming, recognizable land marks that are a HUD icon, or just fucking let it stick any two things together, and some kind of value for how much web needs what.

But no, just slap the camera controls onto the right analog stick, force them onto the rails when things get hairy, and just have one button do everything with no need to worry about making it fit into some kind of mechanical system. Two fucking gens of this bullshit and not a single goddamn game has been able to branch out of this. Cinematic gameplay wouldn't get nearly the rep it does if devs bothered to innovate on player interaction with it instead of using it as a short cut to force a player down a path they can tightly control.

Set pieces can be done without QTEs. Look at the Half-Life series for some examples.

If you absolutely cannot figure out a way to direct the scene without making it a QTE, then just make it a cut scene.

>crane gets damaged, spider-man webs it up
>move on to more gameplay

Voila. You can accomplish good pacing through the use of cut scenes to separate gameplay segments. Jamming in a QTE just to give the player something to do is just jarring.

Of course it's fucking supremely difficult. That's why it'd be a fucking innovation and not just another "press X to do epic maneuver" event. But do you think the industry is doing anything to push that, to try and see if this is something that can be accomplished? Fuck no, they know what sells, they know things have become more about looking nice than playing nice. It being accomplished would be a real achievement worthy of praise for the one who managed it. Something actually worth defending.

But we're still here with people "well, pushing buttons in reaction to something is really just another kind of QTE. You sure look stupid there anon." No expectations, if it's not a piece of absolute shit, why complain? In the middle of an otherwise reactive gameplay loop where you are expected to effect and be effected by any of a nonlinear set of loops or mechanics, we swerve away to something where you're given one option: pass fail on this extremely specific set of inputs that is divorced from the rest of the game. One in, one out. Hell, it'd even be more interesting if the crane prompts split more, such that one failure here, or choosing one of two options here or there formed a different path or a different kind of solution. Not perfect, but fucking something. Fucking anything that moved beyond what we've been chewing on since the turn of the millenium.
