The first one was a legitimately interesting demonstration of how minimalistic gameplay can still be gripping and engaging, even in this day and age where most games are very complex.

Then the sequels happened and it went downhill from there, culminating in, as you said, pure sellout trash by 3.

I like them. I thought 2 was bad, and 3 was just okay. 4 was much better, and SL was a step in the the right direction too. They are cheap jumpscares, but there is some genius behind some of the scares. It is kind of frustrating at times because you see the potential but it sometimes falls flat.

Sucks that they're a meme, but the games did some inventive things with little resources. Will always defend the first.

I think the first one was about as good as it gets. The atmosphere was creepy, the implications of what was going on was subtle and the uncanny valley effect of the animatronics was spot on. It was about as perfect as it gets.

It later got ruined by a billion sequels, details which just made the backstory even more convoluted and pure concentrated autism.

I think they're alright. It's not all that scary when you've seen all the jumpscares, but the atmosphere is always top notch. It always manages to build up paranoia, which in turn makes the jumpscares surprising and actually winning a huge relief.

The first game is good, rest are of varying quality.
I think 3 and SL are the better ones of the sequels, though. SL had the black comedy the sequels forgot, and it's minigame nature led to better spooks.
3's decision to use the child killer as the antagonist is a great callback to the first game and brings the ANOES references full circle by turning him into a slasher villain. It's also why SL's DLC pisses me off, as the developer seems like he'll throw it all away for the sake of a plot twist.

The focus on "lore" is what really hurts these games, I think. The first game focused much more on atmosphere.

I think the first one was pretty good. The jumpscares weren't there to scare you, they were there to punish you for playing the game wrong. The franchise certainly overstayed it's welcome though.

This artist is pretty bad, or at least doesn't really get how to make animatronics creepy.

A big part of the games is what you can and cannot see of them. Freddy's mostly immersed in darkness for instance, and is much more effective as a threat for it.
These guys are all on a generic colored background. Right in front of you. Perfect for a school binder cover maybe, but it certainly doesn't work well for horror. Especially given the designs, which are too clean.
Going off of the tumors and the other organic bits, these should clearly be a lot more messed up, and the pictures themselves should reflect that. Like a movie, colors, background and perspective all play a significant hand in establishing atmosphere and horror.

There's no atmosphere here What you get is a bland, inconsistent artwork. It really feels like this person was hired off of Deviantart or something.

FNAF 1 and 2 were pretty fun. The jumpscares are cheap, but the gameplay is pretty engaging as it's a nice combination of tactics and strategy.
