A terrible ending that forced Bioware to create a 4th installment which was so bad it lead to the dissolvement of the company branch.

They believe that sentient species will inevitably create ai and that ai will inevitably revolt against their creators, they periodically wipe out most (but not all) life to ensure a revolting ai race doesn't exterminate life entirely and preserve a sample of their genetic makeup to use as the core of new reapers.
