The only Metroid game I ever played was Super Metroid and I quit halfway through because I got bored. Should I give the Prime series a try? I do have a Switch after all.

HL3 is really the only one that springs to mind. Valve would literally be able to get away with less than the Metroid Prime 4 announcement and generate way more hype. Either just a 3 or the lambda symbol.

Metroid just has a deceptively large appearance in the videogaming community. The other super huge titles, the CoDs and Battlefields and so on, are expected and never really just show up to say they exist but usually bring something. Metroid is something that there's not really been a real confirmed peep about for awhile, memes about it being dead aside. It's a rather rare combination of overblown hype in the actual visible communtiy and a lack of wider presence that causes this situation.

Aside from the fact that the average speed from the fzeros is about 1000km/h, opening the cockpit would result in a rather ugly situation, you wouldn't even be able stand up, and if you were, you would be immediately ejected, if not dismembered.
