But the most prominent one is the lack of portability. Fans who are unable to play it at Comiket and other local conventions will literally never touch this game. They might buy XX because it means that they can still bring their Switch to conventions, but there's no reason to waste time on MHW beyond "It looks prettier". Some casuals might be interested in it, but unless they show off actual combat any time soon, it's just not going to sell in Japan, and it has literally never sold more in the west than it has in Japan.

I think this announcement came because of the potential trouble that PS4 is facing or is going to face in Japan.

PS4 Software wise only has one game that has sold one million units and that is FFXV. And of those franchises you mentioned the only ones that are million sellers are FF and DQ. DQXI is also releasing on 3DS and Switch, both of which like it or not are going to take some sales from the PS4 version. FF doesn't look like there's a mainline game or FFVIIR releasing soon. So even with DQXI selling well, PS4 doesn't have strong franchises like Nintendo to sell the PS4 in Japan after that considering that we don't know anything about SE release dates.

Wii U despite failing had Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon selling a million each at least, and the Switch has one of those games right now and the other one in 2 months. Despite what you may think Nintendo games are popular Japanese games that are also popular with Japanese people and continue selling over time. If MHW was also released for Switch, it would have eaten up a lot of PS4 sales.

Asia still regard 2G as the king of MonHun too though. It's part of the reason the Chinese and Korean MMOs are always based on 2G mechanics and worlds. The Chinese even rebuilt some of the 3rd and 4th gen monsters in the Dos engine, but for the most part the online games just get original designs instead of incorporating 3rd gen and beyond.

The west is really the only off spot, but the FU loyalty is strong among a cult group, while the rest are all 3rd and 4th gen players.

Worlds looks like the original concept of MonHun from 2003 finally realized anyways. They've even brought some of the items that were only shown in the original art books like the ghillie item back and made it real.

At this point all Capcom needs to do is go out and tell everyone "it's 2G but current gen with global online" and it'll be a success.
